Character.AI files for bankruptcy as Disney bids $20M for its assets

Character.AI, the chatbot startup once valued at $1 billion, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. It seeks a court-supervised sale of its assets and will shut down if no buyer keeps the service running. Disney Worldwide Services has signed on as the lead bidder, offering $20 million for non-exclusive perpetual licences to certain intellectual property and some legal claims, plus transitional services from former employees. Other bidders can still top the offer. The sale is expected to close in late November or early December. The company cited legal and regulatory pressure, monthly operating losses of $8 million to $9 million, and trouble raising capital. It estimated its assets and liabilities at $50 million to $100 million. The app remains online.

Morning Business Report: Apple reportedly cuts iPhone 18 parts orders as Halloween spending and Disney ticket prices rise.

Morning Business Report: Apple reportedly cuts iPhone 18 parts orders as Halloween spending and Disney ticket prices rise. 3 hours ago (LILAMAX)- Apple has reportedly instructed some suppliers to reduce parts production for its iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro models, raising questions about demand for the company's newest smartphones. According to Nikkei Asia, the production adjustments could indicate weaker-than-expected consumer demand. The reported cuts come as Apple's iPhone 18 Pro lineup carries higher prices than previous models. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299, with both models priced $100 higher than their predecessors. Meanwhile, Halloween candy prices continue to climb, but Americans are still expected to spend billions on treats. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for candy and chewing gum increased 8.1% in August compared with the same month last year. Despite those increases, the National Retail Federation projects Americans will spend $4.1 billion on Halloween candy this year. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 400 points Friday, helping stocks finish the week with gains. Investors appeared to look past geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices and elevated interest rates. A new report also suggests inflation is changing how Americans eat during the workday. According to ezCater's lunch report, 54% of U.S.-based full-time employees missed a work lunch at least once a week in 2026. The report found 81% of respondents changed their workplace eating habits because of inflation, while work pressures were another reason employees skipped lunch. Disney visitors are also facing higher costs. The company increased ticket prices this week, pushing the cost of a one-day Park Hopper pass above $300 on peak weekends. Although the multi-park ticket is advertised at $280, additional fees and $18.40 in taxes bring the checkout total to $301.40. Disney is also experimenting with an artificial intelligence chatbot on its website to help visitors find less expensive dates to visit its parks.

Crunchyroll's NYCC announcements include Webtoon adaptation deal, 'Sekiro' and 'Ghost of Tsushima' updates. By Jamie Lang | 10/12/2026 9:30 am | 0 Sign up to get its news digest - delivered directly to your inbox twice a week. Webcomics are becoming one of the hottest sources of new IP in animation today, and Crunchyroll is getting involved with some viral titles before adaptations even start production. The Sony-owned anime streamer has teamed with Hayate and Webtoon Entertainment subsidiary Line Digital Frontier to develop potential anime adaptations of around 15 webcomic titles, giving it a role in shaping projects from the outset. Unveiled at Crunchyroll's New York Comic Con showcase on Thursday, the agreement brings the companies together at the development stage, with Hayate leading production. Crunchyroll will exclusively stream the resulting productions in select territories. So, to clarify, the 15 titles aren't greenlit for production yet; only their co-development has been given the go-ahead for now. The deal adds to Webtoon's growing animation ambitions, following its expanded partnership with Warner Bros. Animation, Amazon MGM Studios' order for a Lore Olympus adaptation from Webtoon and The Jim Henson Company, and a partnership with Disney, which took a 2% stake in the company. Alongside the agreement, Crunchyroll announced anime adaptations of The Remarried Empress and The Boxer, releasing promotional trailers for both, plus a new teaser for Teenage Mercenary. The showcase also delivered release details, first looks, and trailers across Crunchyroll's upcoming slate. Among the highlights: * Sekiro: No Defeat: The fully hand-drawn adaptation of the video game will debut exclusively on Crunchyroll in January 2027 as an eight-episode series. Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and ARCH are producing. * Ghost of Tsushima Legends: Attendees saw a work-in-progress trailer for the series, which is targeting a 2028 release. Based on the game's online multiplayer mode, Hayate and PlayStation Productions are producing it, with Takanobu Mizuno directing and Gen Urobuchi handling series composition and scripts. * Kagurabachi and EAT-MAN: Crunchyroll presented new character art for Kagurabachi, arriving in 2027, and a first look at a new EAT-MAN anime adaptation. * Romance and returning series: New trailers debuted for Here U Are, Everyone's Darling Has a Secret, and The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All. The showcase also previewed Berserk of Gluttony season two and revealed that LiSA will perform the opening theme for Magical Buffs: The Support Caster is Stronger Than He Realized! * Theatrical releases: Ufotable's Witch on the Holy Night will open January 29, 2027, through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Meanwhile, the first five episodes of Yuri!!! on ICE will screen in U.S. and Canadian theaters on October 19 for its tenth anniversary. * Manga and games: Crunchyroll Manga's catalog will exceed 450 titles following an October update. The Witch on the Holy Night visual novel will also join Crunchyroll Game Vault in 2027. The announcements accompanied a separate Crunchyroll-commissioned study examining how anime audiences discover and engage with the art form. As its roundup of its key findings details, engagement often extends beyond viewing into comics, music, and merchandise.

Darth Vader's lightsaber from 'The Empire Strikes Back' expected to fetch at least $1 million at auction.

Darth Vader's lightsaber from 'The Empire Strikes Back' expected to fetch at least $1 million at auction. Darth Vader's lightsaber from his Cloud City duel with Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is heading to auction, with an expected sale price of at least $1 million. Darth Vader's lightsaber coming to auction. The prop is a highlight of Heritage Auctions' Ultimate Star Wars Auction on November 12, 2026. According to Heritage Auctions, the saber was used during the climactic confrontation in Episode V in which Vader reveals that he is Luke's father. It also appeared in Return of the Jedi. The hilt's predicted value stems from its documented screen use and, of course, its connection to a pivotal moment in Star Wars history. Heritage identifies it as a "screen-matched" prop, meaning its distinctive physical details can be matched to the lightsaber seen in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Its use in the Cloud City duel gives collectors a direct connection to Vader's revelation that he is Luke's father. There is also a substantial sales precedent: this same hilt last sold for $3,654,000 at Propstore in 2025. More than two dozen lightsaber props are included in the Ultimate Star Wars Auction. Among them are Anakin Skywalker's sabers from Revenge of the Sith, expected to sell for at least $10,000; Boba Fett's EE-3 carbine blaster from The Empire Strikes Back; a Yoda puppet hand used by Frank Oz; and Anthony Daniels' signed personal third-draft screenplay for the original Star Wars. For any inquiring minds with pocket change to spare, you can check out the full catalog for yourself on Heritage Auctions' website. Heritage also partnered with Disney for the Disney Experiences Auction at D23, which featured Muppet*Vision 3D statues, converted Big Thunder Mountain Railroad train benches, and other park memorabilia. If you're in the market for a more budget-friendly lightsaber solution, you can check out the new Protection & Defense components that recently arrived at Savi's Workshop in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Of the many props used throughout all Star Wars films to date, which one would you most like to own? Let us know on social media!
