Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university is required.
  • Registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or eligibility for or progress toward the Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC), is required.
  • Two to five years of relevant experience in transmission and distribution or substation design is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in substation design, including layouts, grounding, and bus design, is required.
  • Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and occupational health and safety (OH&S), is required.
  • Working knowledge of engineering tools such as AutoCAD, CYMCAP, CDEGS, WINIGS, and ETAP, or similar tools, with experience applying them in project settings, is required.
  • The ability to develop practical, technically sound solutions is required.
  • The ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment is required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with internal teams, clients, and vendors is required.
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and coordinate the design of electrical substations from 12 kV to 500 kV, including layouts and station service systems, with limited supervision.
  • Lead the preparation and review of one-line and phasing diagrams, substation layouts, sections, equipment arrangements, grounding and grid layouts and details, and conduit and cable routing plans.
  • Perform and independently check engineering calculations, studies, and analyses, including grounding studies, lightning protection, switchyard illumination, and rigid and flexible bus studies.
  • Take ownership of assigned design packages and ensure their quality, completeness, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Prepare and review design criteria, technical specifications, reports, and drawing lists.
  • Review vendor drawings and technical submissions for compliance with project specifications and design intent.
  • Provide engineering support during construction by responding to requests for information (RFIs), issuing technical clarifications, and participating in field reviews.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and constructability assessments.
  • Collaborate with civil and structural, protection and control, and telecommunications teams to ensure integrated and coordinated designs.
  • Manage assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior EITs and designers by reviewing work and sharing technical knowledge.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement processes.
  • Ensure applicable safety standards, codes, and best practices are integrated into designs.

  • BC Hydro or utility project experience is an asset.

Clearlake acquires power grid services platform Qualus from New Mountain Capital

Clearlake Capital Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Qualus Corporation, a power and electric grid services platform, from New Mountain Capital. Financial terms were not disclosed. Qualus provides integrated advisory, planning, engineering, digital solutions and field services supporting grid resiliency and sustainability. The company serves investor-owned utilities and commercial organisations, addressing technical complexity created by economic electrification and surging power demands. New Mountain Capital supported Qualus over the past five years during a period of significant growth. The acquisition will be financed by Apollo, Goldman Sachs Alternatives and Clearlake as joint lead arrangers. Clearlake manages over $185 billion in assets and focuses on operational improvements through its O.P.S. approach across multiple sectors.
