Requirements
  • Six years of ASL interpreting experience after interpreter certification in a professional setting, or a bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of ASL interpreting experience after interpreter certification or degree, or a master's degree in a related field and three years of ASL interpreting experience after interpreter certification or degree.
  • Current National Interpreter Certification (CI/CT, NAD-IV, NAD-V, NIC, NIC Advanced, or NIC Master) or State Interpreter Certification (BEI, TX).
  • Ability to interpret fluently by signing simultaneously and/or consecutively from spoken English into American Sign Language and voicing from American Sign Language into spoken English, as required.
  • Ability to interpret for meaning using verbatim, conceptually accurate, or idiomatic methods, as required.
  • High degree of interpretation accuracy.
  • Willingness to provide, accept, and incorporate feedback from the Contracting Officer's Representative, other interpreters, and Federal employees or contractors.
  • Linguistic and cultural expertise in both American Sign Language and English to provide fluent communication for employees, contractors, and guests.
  • Willingness to learn Army terminology, processes, and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn Federal, Department of Defense, and Department of the Army terminology in American Sign Language.
  • Ability to interpret subject matter ranging from simple statements of fact to complex and specialized terminology.
  • Ability to use a computer to communicate via email.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher, as well as Adobe Acrobat and related tools and technology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • United States citizenship is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide American Sign Language interpretation services on an as-needed basis.
  • Translate spoken and written English for hard-of-hearing and deaf employees and customers.
  • Ensure interpretation meets the required quality standards for the Army and its customers.
  • Learn Army acronyms and related terms, words, and phrases to ensure accurate interpretation.
  • Work with Army leaders and employees to support the contract mission.
  • Provide emergency and after-hours interpretation services when required, with at least 48 hours' notice.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience consistently interpreting for United States Government Department of the Army employees is highly preferred.
