Obran Cooperative is a worker-owned holding cooperative that buys and holds profitable small to mid-size businesses and real estate on behalf of its member-owners. It builds capital through a portfolio and governance shared by workers, aiming to generate long-term wealth and opportunities. Members gain ownership stakes in the holdings and receive education to manage assets. The cooperative structure differentiates it from traditional owners by distributing control and profits among worker-owners and focusing on long-term asset ownership rather than short-term exits.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Obran completed its first acquisition, Appalachian Field Services, in June 2025.
  • Acumen America invested $500,000 in 2024, validating the model for impact investors.
  • Obran reported six companies and roughly 450 workers across the United States in 2024.

What critics are saying

  • Joseph Cureton exited leadership effective December 19, 2024, creating succession risk.
  • Acquisitions use leveraged buyouts; debt service can crush cash flow during integration.
  • If worker buy-in stalls, the cooperative model loses control, morale, and acquisition credibility.

What makes Obran Cooperative unique

  • Obran combines worker ownership with a holding-company acquisition model, unlike standard co-ops.
  • It buys profitable small businesses, then converts employees into member-owners after 90 days.
  • Its sector-agnostic structure spans staffing, health, logistics, and real estate.
