Requirements
  • A high school diploma, General Educational Development certificate, or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • A current Certified Nursing Assistant license in the state of practice may be required in certain facilities or departments, in accordance with regulatory requirements or facility or department policy.
  • Depending on department assignment, completion of a unit-approved basic electrocardiogram or electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on-the-job training and a minimum passing score of 85% on the electrocardiogram or electroencephalogram test, with accurate identification of all lethal cardiac dysrhythmias or epileptiform activity.
  • Skills and abilities typically attained with one year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior customer-service experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills and effective human-relations and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, computer literacy, and keyboarding skills.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with activities of daily living and complete necessary tasks to promote patient health, including basic hygiene, mobility, and nutritional-intake assistance.
  • Collect patient specimens and data, including vital signs, input and output, and other delegated measurements, in accordance with unit or facility policy and standards of care.
  • Document objective data and routine aspects of patient care.
  • Assist with transportation of patient specimens.
  • Recognize and report abnormalities or changes in patients’ health status and responses to treatment to a licensed professional.
  • Communicate accurately and completely with other caregivers about the status of assigned patients to promote continuity of care.
  • Perform procedures and use equipment as delegated by a licensed professional and consistent with demonstrated competencies and state scope of practice, including blood draws, Foley catheter removal, electrocardiograms, and electrocardiogram monitoring.
  • Provide supplies, support, and assistance to medical staff and patients for unit-specific procedures under the direct supervision of a licensed professional.
  • Perform receptionist and clerical duties supporting operating efficiency and communication throughout the department.
  • Participate in resolving customer problems by collecting necessary data and following through with the appropriate person.
  • Maintain complete patient records, including admission, transfer, and discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
  • Scan or file reports and chart forms into patient records.
  • Label and maintain accessible charting forms.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of frequently used patient-education materials.
  • Assist in ordering patient specimens.
  • Transcribe and process physician orders using the electronic medical record when assigned.
  • Maintain office, dietary, and medical supplies and complete requisition forms when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Reconcile supply orders upon delivery.
  • Monitor and track electronic equipment, including patient-identification scanners and laptop computers, and ensure that equipment is accounted for and operational.
  • Transport patients, including pre-operative and immediate post-operative patients to the critical-care unit, based on area assignment.
  • Participate in operating-room turnover based on area assignment.
  • Perform all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
  • Provide customers with an excellent service experience by demonstrating the organization’s core and leader behaviors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Recent healthcare experience.
  • Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
  • Additional related education and/or experience.
