Requirements
- A nurse practitioner must be a graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- A nurse practitioner must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
- A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- A physician assistant must have a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
- A physician assistant must be a graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program.
- A physician assistant must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- The professional must hold or obtain the required state licensure, certification, and hospital privileges applicable to the role.
- The professional must be proficient with computers.
- The professional must have communication skills.
- The work requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The professional must work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- The professional must be able to work closely with others and during protracted or irregular hours.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and plan disposition for immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated patient assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with hospitalist faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests needed before discharge and for outpatient follow-up.
- Develop individualized plans of care that include teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum covered by the professional’s education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex hospitalized-patient situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting, as applicable.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient’s medical record according to hospital and WVU Medicine policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve improvements in patient outcomes and care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of inpatient and ambulatory care delivery.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as needed.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
- Assist hospitalist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- Master’s-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
