Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I track.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I track.
  • Certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or equivalent is required through an accepted certifying organization, including American Medical Technologists, the American Association of Medical Assistants, National Healthcareer Association, MedCA, National Association for Health Professionals, or National Center for Competency Testing.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse program is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I track.
  • An active Licensed Practical Nurse license in South Carolina or a compact state is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I track.
  • The position requires the physical ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, and lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing approximately 50 pounds unassisted.
  • The employee must be physically qualified for respirator use, maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and occasionally work in dusty or confined spaces.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure accurate calibration, cleaning, and scheduled maintenance of clinical and laboratory equipment in compliance with OSHA, DHEC, and UMA requirements, with documentation.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information; document test and examination results.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and develop patient education materials as necessary.
  • Maintain examination-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment in compliance with OSHA, DHEC, and UMA requirements.
  • Maintain timely patient flow and assist with scheduling appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide education related to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Observe, record, and report patients' physical and psychosocial conditions and reactions to medications and treatments to the physician.
  • Respond to and triage telephone calls and call in physician orders as directed.
  • Instruct patients regarding treatment or medication as ordered by the physician.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, samples, and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and completion of tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
  • Room patients, take vital signs and health histories, document in an electronic medical record, give injections, and assist with minor procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient-care experience is preferred for the Certified Medical Assistant I track.
