Requirements
  • One to three years of experience providing peer support to people with psychiatric disabilities and/or co-occurring disorders is required.
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system is required, including experience such as psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, or community mental health groups.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license, adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle, a safe driving record, at least six months of valid United States driver's-license history, and successful completion of a driver's screening background check are required.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
  • The ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds, assist persons served with daily living tasks, and maneuver through facilities is required.
  • The ability to operate a computer and office equipment is required.
  • The ability to communicate with persons served, staff, and external representatives, along with the specified visual abilities, is required.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • The employee must become a Certified Peer Specialist or obtain a Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery Recovery Coach Academy certificate of completion within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of Peer Support practices, applicable Codes of Ethics standards, person-centered and strengths-based recovery approaches, engagement and participatory planning techniques, advocacy techniques, legal and human rights, and community resources is required.
  • The ability to create and maintain supportive, trusting relationships, maintain confidentiality, work independently, and work as part of a team is required.
Responsibilities
  • Promote the engagement, hope, integration, and functioning of persons served so they can live successfully in the community.
  • Welcome, orient, and engage persons served into services and collaborate with licensed mental health professionals to determine needed services.
  • Initiate and conduct intake processes for referred persons served within 72 hours, including completing wellness assessments and Power Statements.
  • Provide support, education, and advocacy during service and life transitions, including hospital or detoxification discharge and transitions to independent housing.
  • Introduce persons served to other Team Peer Specialists through warm handoffs and maintain contact with people who struggle with engagement.
  • Promote access to healthcare and employment services, safe housing, community tenure, self-sufficiency, and successful service completion.
  • Support choice, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in treatment, care coordination, and support services.
  • Facilitate Peer Support groups and connect people with psychiatric conditions and substance-use or addiction concerns to recovery tools, resources, and mutual-help groups.
  • Implement Peer Support-oriented treatment-plan interventions and complete documentation in accordance with Certified Peer Specialist and applicable Codes of Ethics standards.
  • Help persons served develop self-advocacy skills, recovery and self-management plans, Wellness Recovery Action Plans, relationships, and community support networks.
  • Provide ongoing problem-solving, skills training, side-by-side support, coping techniques, and self-help strategies to improve daily living skills.
  • Teach, consult, and collaborate with Team members to promote recovery values, language, and culture.
  • Onboard, orient, coach, train, supervise, and mentor new and existing Team Peer Specialists.
  • Use and model recovery-oriented, person-centered, motivational interviewing, harm-reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Supervise Peer Specialists, provide training and consultation, address ethical conflicts, support Peer Specialists' recovery-focused contributions, and review performance issues with the Team Leader.
  • Lead the Team Peer Specialists' efforts to organize and deliver Peer Support.
  • Visit all group living environments and staffed independent living settings regularly to provide Peer Support.
  • Facilitate Wellness Recovery Action Plan groups.
  • Receive supervision, consultation, and training from the Director of Recovery Services and participate in the Lead Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup.
  • Provide feedback and input for policy, program development, and work decisions, and may co-facilitate the Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
