Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with ten years of medical laboratory experience as an alternative qualification.
  • An Associate Degree in a related science field is preferred.
  • Professional registration is preferred.
  • Experience in a high-complexity laboratory is preferred.
  • Candidates must be highly proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Candidates must have basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, information security, electronic medical documentation, and email.
  • Candidates must have sufficient hearing, vision, and dexterity to perform duties safely.
  • Candidates must be able to adjust to change, prioritize duties, handle stress, communicate effectively, work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, manage interruptions, and work under pressure during patient contact.
  • The position requires exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and use of appropriate protective measures.
  • Candidates must complete GrahamRMC orientation and department orientation within the first 60 days when applicable.
  • Employees must complete continuing education and training as needed to maintain position certification or licensure.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine laboratory tests used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease according to established standards and practices.
  • Maintain hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Perform blood cell counting and identification, coagulation studies, specialized hematology procedures, chemical specimen analysis, serologic and transfusion medicine procedures, and microscopic specimen evaluation when required.
  • Perform patient venipunctures using aseptic and antiseptic principles to prevent infection and specimen contamination.
  • Receive laboratory specimens and centrifuge blood specimens to separate cells from serum or plasma.
  • Consult with the pathologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings.
  • Discard tested samples according to hospital policy or store them according to laboratory policy for future reference.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and stains according to standard formulas, procedures, or manufacturer recommendations.
  • Perform Gram stains and wet mounts, set up bacterial cultures, and incubate cultures.
  • Perform quality control and maintain required records, reports, and statistics.
  • Oversee Blood Bank and Hematology departments and assist with quality-control monitoring.
  • Maintain inventory by requesting, issuing, and receiving supplies according to laboratory policy.
  • Maintain patient, medical staff, departmental, client, and vendor relations while providing customer service.
  • Adjust the schedule to maintain staff coverage.
  • Participate in educational programs, in-service meetings, and required meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Coordinate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain infection-control policies.
  • Solve practical problems and interpret written and oral instructions.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and ensure the effective and safe use of equipment.
  • Adhere to the assigned schedule, report to work on time, and follow the Code of Conduct.
  • Recognize and incorporate patients' and families' cultural, spiritual, gender, racial, ethnic, lifestyle, socioeconomic, age, and value differences into individualized care or action plans.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
