Requirements
  • Completion of formal training in an approved school of radiologic technology.
  • Maintain current New York State licensure.
  • Maintain American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support certification with continuing education credits as required.
  • Band Two requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience as a specialist in Computed Tomography in a clinical or hospital environment, with at least 6 months dedicated to the University of Rochester Medical Center Imaging Sciences Department.
  • Band Two requires certification in Computed Tomography and the ability to perform all Computed Tomography-related duties.
  • Band Three requires a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as a specialist in Computed Tomography in a clinical or hospital environment.
  • Band Three technologists must be certified in Computed Tomography and satisfy the requirements and duties of a Band Two Certified Computed Tomography Technologist.
Responsibilities
  • Perform Computed Tomography examinations by following and verifying referring provider orders and remaining compliant with Imaging Sciences department requirements and governing bodies.
  • Identify patient service requirements.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the procedure or treatment to be performed.
  • Prepare patients for radiological and Computed Tomography procedures by positioning patients and adjusting immobilization devices.
  • Move equipment into the specified position and adjust equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Apply imaging techniques appropriate to the patient's age, ability to understand the procedure, sensory needs, and ability to cooperate to obtain quality images.
  • Apply established methodologies according to policy and procedure.
  • Produce high-quality images and prepare and present them with pertinent patient information for timely interpretation.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation and maintain Computed Tomography image production and quality according to established standards, orders, protocols, and procedures.
  • Practice radiation protection techniques using beam-restrictive devices, patient shielding, exposure factors, and automatic exposure controls.
  • Perform and evaluate equipment quality-control measurements.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and notify appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors and adhere to safety policies.
  • At an advanced level, train new employees or lead day-to-day work activities.
  • Perform I-stats and pregnancy tests, start intravenous lines, scan patients safely and efficiently, inject intravenous contrast, prepare oral contrast, complete associated paper and computer work, and discharge patients with appropriate post-Computed Tomography instructions.
  • For Band Three, precept newly hired technologists by orienting them to equipment, imaging routines and procedures, computer programs and software, and departmental and hospital policies.
  • For Band Three, serve as a subject-matter expert in downtime procedures and act as a super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced.
  • For Band Three, mentor existing employees through one-on-one assistance in conjunction with the supervisor.
  • For designated lead technologists, assist the shift supervisor or determine workflow and staff schedules or assignments in the supervisor's absence.
  • For designated lead technologists, provide performance-evaluation input to the section supervisor and input to Computed Tomography management for departmental goals and objectives.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 1 year dedicated to the University of Rochester Medical Center Imaging Sciences Department is preferred for Band Three advancement.
  • Comfort operating many of the various platforms within the University of Rochester CT environment is expected for Band Three technologists.
