Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED plus three months of related experience as a program leader working with individuals with disabilities, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Some locations require a current and valid driver's license.
  • Be able to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, midnights, weekends, and holidays, and be available for overtime when required.
  • Complete a criminal history record investigation, TB screening, and mandatory training as a condition of employment.
  • Meet additional state standards and guidelines at childcare program locations licensed by the Virginia State Department of Social Services.
Responsibilities
  • Facilitate the inclusion of preschool, youth, teen, and adult participants with special needs in recreation programs using adaptive techniques.
  • Assist participants with activities of daily living and self-help skills, including toileting, feeding, changing clothes, and diapering.
  • Facilitate friendships with other program participants.
  • Use behavior management techniques to ensure the safety of staff and participants.
  • Communicate with parents and participants to convey essential information and participant progress.
  • Handle emergencies to prevent injury or incidents.
  • Assist with preparing reports.
  • Assist with special events and field trips.
  • Drive city vehicles to transport participants when required by the program.
  • Review and interpret confidential participant files to provide safe, effective services.
  • Substitute in other programs to maintain sufficient staff-to-participant ratios.
  • Work additional hours or accept changes in location or assignment in response to short-term department needs or city-wide emergencies.
