United trades at forward P/E of 11 as US airfares jump 25.5% and CEO predicts more rises

US airline fares rose 25.5% year over year in July, and United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby expects further gradual increases through the first half of 2027 if demand holds. United's second-quarter revenue reached $17.67 billion, up 16% year over year. Despite industry-wide fare growth, United shares have gained only 2.69% year to date, compared with Delta's 20.64% rise. United trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 11, versus Delta's 13. Kirby framed the fare increases as structural catch-up, noting airport fees have risen roughly 60% since COVID and maintenance costs remain elevated. He told investors that airfares are still 13% below 2019 levels in real terms.

United Airlines CEO targets JFK expansion and new international routes amid rising fuel costs

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby announced plans to expand at New York's JFK Airport and increase international routes. The airline aims to acquire takeoff and landing slots from struggling carriers, potentially returning to JFK next year through its partnership with JetBlue Airways. United's second-quarter operating revenue rose 16% year over year to $17.7 billion, with revenue per available seat mile up 12.1%. The carrier raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance to $9 to $11, despite expecting nearly $6 billion in additional fuel expenses for 2026. The expansion builds on United's existing network of more than 370 destinations across six continents. Shares closed at $113.17, down 18% from their June record high.

United Airlines sees loyalty revenue surge 13% as Amex cardholders boost premium spending

United Airlines reported strong second-quarter results driven by loyalty programmes, with American Express playing an unexpected role despite not co-branding a card with the carrier. United's MileagePlus card is issued exclusively by Chase through 2029, but Amex channels premium spend through its Platinum cardholders, who can designate United for a $200 annual credit on bags and fees. Business Platinum holders receive a 35% rebate on economy fares booked through Amex Travel. The airline also benefits from Amex's transfer partnerships with programmes like Air Canada Aeroplan and Singapore KrisFlyer, which provide access to United seats. United's chief commercial officer reported new co-branded card accounts rose 22% year-over-year, hitting a second-quarter record, whilst card spend increased 14%. Loyalty revenue grew 11.3%, or above 13% when adjusted for accounting changes.
