About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, welding, or mechatronics engineering.
  • Three to eight years of experience automating assembly, fabrication, or welding on a production line, such as robotic welding cells, fixtures and tooling, plastic welding, pressure vessel or filter housing assembly, or skid and module fabrication.
  • Experience specifying, commissioning, and starting up automated equipment with vendors and integrators, and writing operating procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with thermoplastic fabrication such as polypropylene or PVDF, welding processes, and pressure testing; comfort with robot programming such as FANUC, ABB, or KUKA and PLC-driven equipment.
  • Experience supervising technicians or operators, or serving as the primary floor resource when a production line stops.
  • Ability to combine mechanical design, fabrication, automation, and chemistry in practical problem-solving.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Able to work extended hours and weekends frequently to support critical project milestones.
Responsibilities
  • Design, source, and commission the automated module assembly cell, including element loading, fitting and internal seating, vessel closure and sealing, pressure testing, in-line inspection, and reject handling.
  • Manage polypropylene vessel and fitting fabrication, including butt fusion, extrusion, and infrared plastic welding, machining fittings and internals, leak and burst testing, and material and process qualification.
  • Qualify and manage module and skid suppliers for plastic welding, machined fittings, vessels, frames, and bought-out components; establish incoming inspection, vendor factory acceptance tests, and process qualification before first article.
  • Automate skid fabrication and welding, including frame fabrication, robotic or fixtured welding of steel and plastic piping, welding procedure qualification, hydrotesting, and the assembly sequence through shipment.
  • Establish production readiness through takt and throughput models, bills of material, routings, overall equipment effectiveness tracking, changeover procedures, operating procedures, and operator training.
  • Specify and select vendors for equipment; conduct factory and site acceptance tests; install and commission assembly, fabrication, and welding equipment on schedule and within budget.
  • Establish fabrication-shop safety and quality practices, including guarding, robot and welding safety, lockout/tagout, pressure-equipment quality records, and traceability for every shipped module and skid.
  • Hire and lead production staff, own the daily production plan, and lay the groundwork for a greenfield facility scaled to ten times current production.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in water treatment, filtration, battery pack, packaging, or electronics assembly.

About the company

Kunin Technologies focuses on recovering critical metals using vertically integrated ion-exchange technology. It targets by-product critical metals and promotes domestic, US-based mineral processing, aiming to rebuild American ion-exchange capability. The company’s technology uses ion-exchange processes to selectively capture and recover metals from industrial streams, enabling purification and recovery of critical metals within the U.S. infrastructure. Across competitors, Kunin differentiates itself by its emphasis on vertical integration, domestic manufacturing, and a narrative directed at industrial and policy stakeholders that highlights the offshoring of mineral production and the need to revitalize domestic capabilities. Its goal is to be the leader in American critical metals by providing the technology and capability to recover these metals domestically, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains.

What believers are saying

  • DOE funding in April 2026 validates Kunin's gallium recovery thesis for defense supply chains.
  • Kunin says it raised $1.75 million and is piloting with partners.
  • Export controls on Chinese rare-earth technology keep domestic processing premium and politically supported.

What critics are saying

  • Kunin remains pre-scale; piloting must prove purity, cost, and throughput before 2027.
  • One failed DOE pilot would crush credibility with mines, smelters, and later customers.
  • If gallium economics disappoint, Kunin becomes a science project with no durable buyer.

What makes Kunin Technologies unique

  • Kunin is one of five DOE TRACE-Ga awardees, targeting 12 tons yearly gallium.
  • It claims vertically integrated resin, process, and metal-production capabilities, rare outside China.
  • Its ion-exchange platform targets byproduct metals from mine waste, smelters, and refineries.
