Disney over Comcast for 2027: $94.4B revenue and lower debt versus Comcast's break-up risk

Comcast and Walt Disney both face big changes, and a Motley Fool writer favours Disney as the safer buy for 2027. Comcast's fiscal 2025 revenue was flat at $123.7 billion, with net income of $20 billion and free cash flow of $19.2 billion. Disney's revenue rose 3.4% to $94.4 billion, with net income of $12.4 billion and free cash flow of $10.1 billion. Comcast trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 6.7x, against 14.8x for Disney. But Comcast plans to split its entertainment and technology businesses in 2027 and has paused share buybacks. Disney has a new chief executive, Josh D'Amaro. Its next earnings report is due November 17.

Magic Kingdom ferryboat dock expansion appears nearly complete as construction equipment disappears.

Magic Kingdom ferryboat dock expansion appears nearly complete as construction equipment disappears. Construction on the ferryboat dock expansion outside Magic Kingdom appears to be nearing completion, with much of the equipment and loose materials previously visible at the site now cleared away. Magic Kingdom ferryboat dock expansion. During our visit to Magic Kingdom on Saturday, October 31, we noticed that the construction area along Seven Seas Lagoon looked considerably tidier than during our previous inspections. As viewed aboard a ferryboat leaving the Magic Kingdom, the expanded dock appears largely finished, although dark green coverings and wooden construction barriers continue to conceal portions of the walkway. The new guardrails that we first spotted earlier this month remain in place along the extended dock. The railings match those found throughout the existing ferryboat loading area. More notably, much of the construction equipment and loose material that previously occupied the site is no longer visible. Earlier reports showed floating work platforms, machinery, and building supplies along the waterfront, but these are absent from our latest views. Some temporary coverings, wooden barriers, and floating containment booms remain, suggesting that additional finishing work or site cleanup may still be necessary before the expanded area can officially open for use. Disney filed a permit for the dock project in February, and the state's water management district approved it in March. The expansion follows the 2021 installation of second-level ferryboat ramps, which allow guests to unload from both decks more quickly. Elsewhere, Disney is currently constructing a fourth ferryboat to join the Magic Kingdom fleet. Named in honor of former Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton, it is currently under construction backstage.

Disney+ restores 4K and HDR10 in Europe. But not on all TVs!

Disney+ restores 4K and HDR10 in Europe. But not on all TVs! Photo: Disney Disney+ is gradually restoring high picture quality after issues related to a patent dispute. In 11 European Union countries and Brazil, movies and series are again available in 4K and HDR10. There is, however, a catch: the features work only on selected devices, and popular Apple TV 4K and Nvidia Shield set-top boxes still remain unsupported. New codecs solve some of the problems. It all began with a patent dispute between Disney and InterDigital over HEVC. As a result, Dolby Vision and 3D disappeared in June, and in July 4K and HDR10 were also removed in certain countries. Disney+ has found a partial solution. Since August it has been restoring 4K content using the VP9 codec, and now it has begun reintroducing HDR10 using VP9 Profile 2. According to Disney, the entire previous library of 4K and HDR10 content is once again available in those formats. Unfortunately, Dolby Vision still has not returned. Photo: Disney Not all TVs have regained 4K and HDR. The biggest problem remains compatibility. The new solution works, among others, on selected Google TV and Android TV devices, on LG TVs with webOS from 2020, on Hisense TVs with VIDAA from 2019, and on Amazon Fire TV devices. The situation is worse for users of Apple TV 4K and Nvidia Shield, who in countries subject to the restrictions still cannot use 4K and HDR. Samsung TVs running Tizen are also missing from the list of supported devices. Importantly, Poland is not among the 11 EU countries affected by these restrictions. The changes concern, among others, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. The patent dispute is still ongoing, and InterDigital has also extended it to include VP9 technology. So further changes to 4K and HDR availability cannot be ruled out.
