Requirements
  • Strong mechanical fundamentals in mechanisms, structures, materials, tolerances, manufacturing processes, and first-principles tradeoffs.
  • Experience building real electromechanical systems such as robots, arms, drones, vehicles, race cars, manufacturing equipment, medical devices, consumer hardware, lab instruments, or other machines where software meets moving parts.
  • Ability to use computer-aided design as a thinking tool while building, measuring, disassembling, and debugging physical hardware.
  • Ability to evaluate cost, assembly, serviceability, and reliability alongside design quality.
  • Ability to work through ambiguous problems by defining constraints, making tradeoffs, and producing tested parts.
  • Ability to communicate mechanical, electrical, supplier, and design tradeoffs across disciplines.
  • Ability to move quickly while maintaining appropriate standards for prototyping, analysis, drawings, and design simplicity.
Responsibilities
  • Design robot structures, mechanisms, joints, covers, mounts, service panels, and assemblies that are capable, approachable, and manufacturable.
  • Work on motors, servos, transmissions, bushings, bearings, horns, sleeves, springs, stiffness, backlash, load paths, and other mechanisms that make motion reliable.
  • Package cameras, cables, printed circuit boards, fans, heatsinks, connectors, power, compute, sensors, and fasteners for rapid assembly, servicing, and iteration.
  • Move designs from computer-aided design to printed, machined, or sourced parts; assemble robots; debug failures; and update drawings, bills of materials, and release notes.
  • Simplify parts, reduce assembly time, select processes and materials, create fixtures and jigs, communicate with suppliers, and track cost and reliability in design decisions.
  • Build practical tests for wear, cable failures, heat, impacts, backlash, cycle life, serviceability, and real-world robot failure modes.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering, robotics software, autonomy, and operations on algorithms, boards, harnesses, calibration, and physical design.
  • Establish standards for computer-aided design hygiene, drawings, part numbering, prototype logs, design reviews, and lightweight hardware-team systems.
  • Build and tear down the current robot to understand assembly flow, failure modes, cost drivers, and service pain points.
  • Own two or three immediate mechanical improvements from computer-aided design through a tested robot.
  • Create a mechanical roadmap for the next robot revision focused on cost, strength, assembly, repairability, and reliability.
  • Improve the computer-aided design, bill of materials, drawing, and release process so parts, suppliers, and robot builds remain synchronized.
  • Establish tests for thermal performance, cable strain, repeated motion, impacts, joint wear, and assembly variation.
  • Work with electrical engineering on connector, printed circuit board, power, thermal, and packaging constraints, and with software on calibration, collisions, serviceability, and developer-facing reliability.
