Requirements
  • A master's and/or doctorate in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning is required.
  • Experience teaching diverse students at the baccalaureate or higher degree level is required.
  • An unencumbered California registered nurse license or eligibility for licensure in California is required.
  • Current competence in the theory or clinical area at the level of the student being taught is required.
  • Experience working with leadership in healthcare and academic institutions and community organizations is required.
  • The ability to function effectively independently and as a member of a team is required.
  • The ability to communicate using email, word documents, and web-based programs is required.
  • The ability to express and exchange ideas by spoken word in person or over the phone is required.

Responsibilities
  • Complete the required orientation for adjunct faculty.
  • Create a dynamic, learner-centered environment that supports diverse student learning needs based on educational theory and evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Apprise students of their progress at the mid-term point as defined in the syllabus and establish a mutual learning plan for students who are not meeting expectations.
  • Notify the program director or chair, and the course manager when relevant, of at-risk students as soon as they are identified and at least weekly thereafter.
  • Participate in program and course faculty meetings as needed.
  • Meet with program faculty to review the course and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Refer students to appropriate learning and support resources.
  • Prepare and conduct effective classroom or hybrid learning activities congruent with course objectives.
  • Plan learning experiences appropriate to the student's level.
  • Organize and maintain the Canvas course.
  • Respond to student electronic and telephone communications within 48 hours.
  • Prepare and review written examinations, papers, and student projects and evaluate learner performance in the classroom.
  • Meet with students outside class as requested to provide learning support.
  • Submit attendance at the start of the course.
  • Meet with the course manager before the first day of clinical to review clinical and course requirements.
  • Complete an appropriate clinical orientation to sites where the faculty member will oversee students, when necessary, and maintain and enhance competence in the clinical teaching area.
  • Model reflective and critical thinking in the lab or clinical environment and coach and mentor students.
  • Confer with students about their progress and assist them in developing learning plans to achieve course objectives.
  • Review written assignments and provide timely written feedback.
  • Document student progress on appropriate forms and provide a learning plan for attaining objectives when necessary.
  • Submit students' final clinical evaluations for filing and submit final grades.
