Requirements
  • Five years of experience towing barges as Master, coastwise on the United States West Coast.
  • A valid Coast Guard license, minimum 200 GRT Near Coastal, with a Master of Towing endorsement.
  • A valid radio operator’s license.
  • Valid STCW endorsements for OICNW, Basic Training, GMDSS, and Vessel Security.
  • A valid driver’s license, TWIC Card, and passport.
  • A valid First Aid and CPR Certificate.
  • A valid 24-hour HAZWOPER qualification.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to climb onto barges and up and down ladders, without fear of heights.
  • Ability to work with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to handle exposure to all weather conditions, including rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, and heavy seas.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of vessel schedules and work hours.
  • Ability to work on different equipment or vessels and in different regions.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure safe and efficient navigation of the vessel, including maneuvering during voyages, arrivals, and departures.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, company policies and procedures, and safety practices.
  • Maintain an understanding of oil barge operations, terminal requirements, and regulations related to oil barges.
  • Instruct crew members and provide information necessary to meet safety, compliance, and environmental protection obligations.
  • Conduct inspections, ensure compliance with safety and maintenance requirements, and arrange maintenance and repairs to correct deficiencies.
  • Use cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
  • Direct crew in safety meetings and drills and maintain the associated records.
  • Prepare, monitor, and update vessel work lists and maintenance schedules.
  • Prepare written reports in accordance with company and regulatory agency directives.
  • Manage vessel inventory and prepare material requisitions for parts and supplies.
  • Review requisitions and work orders created by crewmembers before submission and ensure efficient use of supplies.
  • Coordinate assist tugs and pilots and ensure adherence to port and terminal requirements.
  • Direct and supervise crewmembers in their duties and assigned work projects.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and working order of the vessel and barge.
  • Direct, fairly evaluate, and correct crewmember performance.
  • Ensure crewmembers have current and valid voyage documents and comply with regulatory and company training requirements.
  • Adhere to the vessel operating budget and maximize cost efficiency.
  • Work and think independently, including during stressful situations.
  • Apply basic mechanical understanding of propulsion, auxiliary, and deck machinery.
  • Respond quickly and provide effective leadership during emergency situations.
  • Use lifesaving, damage-control, and safety equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Experience with coastwise towing on the United States West Coast, including Southeast, Central, and/or Western Alaska.
