About the job

Requirements
  • At least 6 years of experience in software and/or infrastructure engineering.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Deep, hands-on production experience operating Kubernetes and AWS at scale across multiple accounts and regions.
  • Operational depth in at least one owned system beyond the cluster, especially the observability stack (Prometheus and Alertmanager at scale), AWS networking, Vault, or artifact/CI infrastructure; experience must involve running these systems, not merely using them.
  • Strong AWS networking judgment covering VPC, peering, Transit Gateway, and subnet/CIDR design.
  • A track record as a critical reviewer, identifying subtle infrastructure issues and long-term risks before they ship.
  • Experience leading technical work and mentoring engineers, with the ability to manage, clarify, and plan around uncertainty.
Responsibilities
  • Own the reliability and operability of the platform systems, with a focus on understanding what is happening and why.
  • Establish and enforce platform standards, including RBAC, admission webhooks, resource limits, LimitRanges, and policy-as-code.
  • Manage infrastructure-as-code with Terraform across AWS accounts.
  • Review infrastructure changes—including Terraform, Kubernetes configurations, CI/CD pipelines, and observability configurations—to identify subtle issues and long-term risks before release.
  • Turn recurring requests such as ingress, DNS, and service accounts into self-service workflows that are difficult to misuse.
  • Drive resolution of platform incidents with a focus on learning and lasting system improvement.
  • Evaluate new patterns, including Gateway API/Kgateway and claim-based self-service, based on tradeoffs.
  • Mentor less-senior engineers and increase the team's depth in the systems it owns.
  • Own the reliability of and critically review observability and monitoring systems, including Prometheus, Alertmanager, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry across production regions; manage cardinality budgets and recording-rule design, Prometheus federation/sharding/long-term storage strategy, and Alertmanager high availability and alert-routing blast radius.
  • Operate multi-region EKS clusters, including upgrades, node groups, Karpenter, controller lifecycle, and add-on/configuration management; identify failure modes such as subnet IP exhaustion, API server latency, ArgoCD reconciliation lag, Prometheus cardinality, and Karpenter consolidation disruption.
  • Manage AWS networking across accounts and regions, including VPC design, subnet allocation and CIDR management, VPC peering, Transit Gateway, security groups, Route53, NAT gateway topology, and 24/7 networking alarms for production networking between clusters and squad resources.
  • Manage CI/CD and artifact systems, including GitLab runner fleet, AMI updates, cache and access; GitOps delivery through ArgoCD; and the Nexus artifact repository and its storage lifecycle.
  • Manage access and identity systems, including Vault secrets, IAM roles and service accounts for cluster applications, cluster permissions for audit compliance, and AI model access including cost alerts and reporting.
  • Manage cost observability, including OpenCost, orphaned EBS cleanup, cost anomaly investigations, and rightsizing attribution across teams.
  • Maintain internal tools and delivery systems, including the container image build pipeline and base image standards, code audit tooling, HedgeDoc, the S3 and CloudFront UI CDN, and adopted applications without another owner.
Desired Qualifications
  • Production experience with Prometheus long-term storage or sharding, such as Thanos, Cortex, Mimir, or equivalent.
  • Experience owning a container image or base image pipeline.
  • Experience with policy-as-code, including Kyverno or OPA, and admission webhook design.
  • Experience building claim-based self-service platform capabilities.
  • Go experience is a plus but is not required.
