Requirements
  • High school completion.
  • A Social Services diploma or related diploma or degree.
  • At least one year of experience in frontline social service work.
  • Willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose as they relate to the position.
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete applicable screening and background checks, including an Abuse Registry check, and provide an original background-check document.
  • Ability to comply with occupational health and safety legislation and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform keyboarding and manual record keeping, lift and pack clients’ or residents’ property and personal effects, and engage in recreational activities.
  • Attentive listening and observation of body language, continuous environmental monitoring, multitasking, reading, working in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines, and coping with stressful situations.
  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor the environment and clients or residents to ensure safety and security, complete regular status checks, and conduct room searches as required.
  • Maintain and update documentation, including in-out and incident log books, and initiate new documentation as needed.
  • Provide laundry services for the shelters and shelter clients.
  • Clean shelter rooms, washrooms, kitchens, lounges, and common areas, and perform basic building maintenance.
  • Complete reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army.
  • Coordinate and facilitate resident programming as required.
  • Perform intake and discharge procedures for clients or residents as assigned.
  • Monitor behavior, intervene in crisis situations, and provide emotional support and advocacy as required.
  • Distribute funds to residents according to established policy guidelines.
  • Develop interpersonal relationships that promote dignity and respect.
  • Liaise with police, funders, court personnel, community agencies, families, and other staff members.
  • Provide orientation to newly hired staff, volunteers, and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
