'I use Lime bikes for almost everything': E-bikes hit milestone after West Midlands launch.

'I use Lime bikes for almost everything': E-bikes hit milestone after West Midlands launch. Published 2nd Sep 2026, 14:04 BST Updated 2nd Sep 2026, 14:08 BST Lime celebrated milestone number of rides in the West Midlands. More than a million rides have taken place on Lime bikes ever since the service launched in the West Midlands in April 2026. Lime first launched in Birmingham, Coventry and Solihull on April 1. The service then expanded into the Black Country hubs of Sandwell and Wolverhampton on June 1. Data from Lime shared that lots of riders have continued using the service after their first journey, with nearly half (45%) going on to take a second trip within a week of taking their first trip. In particular, one person has completed more than 530 trips to date, since the service launched five months ago. By far, the busiest day so far was Friday, June 26, followed by Saturday, June 27. "I use Lime bikes for almost everything - grocery runs, going to the gym, getting to and from the train station, and even the occasional leisurely cycle," said Neil Parks, a Birmingham-based transportation student who has completed 448 rides since April. He also praised Lime bikes for it being an "easy" way of travelling through Birmingham. Neil continued: "I first used a Lime bike in May to get to the train station, and before long I was using them for trips to the gym and supermarket too. Now, I ride one almost every day and they've become central to my daily life. As a Transportation Planning and Engineering student, I appreciate having an easy, sustainable way to get around." The local mayor praised the service for making active travel easier for people in the region. Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: "Lime is making active travel an easy choice for short trips like going to work, meeting up with friends, or connecting to our wider bus, tram, and train network. "This milestone shows there's a huge appetite among residents and visitors for cleaner, greener, and more convenient ways to travel. Getting more people to cycle is also helping us cut traffic congestion, clean up our air, and improve people's health and fitness. And all at zero cost to the taxpayer."

City, TXST approves contract with Lime scooters.

City, TXST approves contract with Lime scooters. August 31, 2026 Texas State computer information systems major Sammy Wells rides a scooter through campus, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020, on the Bobcat Trail by the Quad. State and the San Marcos City Council approved a partnership with the owners of Lime to make scooters accessible to residents, students and visitors of San Marcos. Scooters are expected to begin operating on Sept. 1, after Texas State's Sustainability Department executed a contract with Lime to allow scooters in designated areas around campus, and after the city council approved their partnership with Lime on Aug. 18. Emma Parsley, program manager for the Office of Sustainability, said in an email to The Star that the agreement is intended to support Texas State's sustainability efforts by expanding the transportation options available to Bobcats. The ridership data will be shared with both the city and Texas State. "That information can help the university and city understand how the service is being used and evaluate its role within the overall transportation system," Parsley wrote. The agreement hopes to provide alternative transportation, particularly for shorter trips around campus. During the meeting, it was stated that the new agreement with Lime will operate using the same map as SPIN, with the addition of the east side of the interstate. San Marcos previously had a contract with SPIN, a dockless scooter company; the contract ended on June 30, 2025. Lonny Stern, Texas government relations lead, stated during the city council meeting on Aug. 18 that the program is intended for 18-year-olds and older, requiring any adult who registers and allows a minor to ride a scooter to take full responsibility. Areas that will be considered no-ride zones, like riding near the river, will not be permitted, and Lime hopes to begin working on designated parking areas, Stern said during the city council meeting. The council is planning on testing out locations of parking corrals by adding street tape until it is approved. "We'll ask them [participants] to register and say that they want this service. When they do that, they give us an email that then becomes part of their account; anytime their account uses the scooter, they get the discount," Stern said during the meeting. Looking at access programs and simply going based on geographic zone isn't as effective as registering and showing proof of eligibility, Stern said during the city council meeting. The agreement includes revenue to the city in the form of a per-trip fee of $0.10 for trips originating within San Marcos, according to the San Marcos City Council agenda. Lime will be offering a Lime access program to lower-income participants, and a 50% discount. This program will be accessible to those who receive any federal, local, or state assistance, according to Amy Finn, transit manager for San Marcos, during the city council meeting. The application for the access program requires the rider's name, email and proof of eligibility. The proof must be submitted through a file upload. Programs that are accepted include: SNAP, Medicaid, Reduced-rate utility bill, free or reduced school lunch program, reduced transit fare program, Social Security, WIC, federally subsidized housing, Pell Grant recipient, and Local or state-subsidized housing. Anyone who receives any kind of government assistance is eligible. Jason Harris, a radiation therapy junior, said he uses a scooter every day to get around campus more easily, and believes that scooters are safe. "Usually scooters are safe. If you are taught to be safe, same thing with cars and motorcycles, it could be dangerous if the person is unreliable or deemed dangerous," Harris said. Harris said scooters are convenient for students who have to walk long distances between classes, and for students with injuries who struggle walking through stairs. Kaityln Kostelnik, public relations senior, believes that scooters are convenient but they pose a safety concern to students walking, especially in large areas that are normally crowded. Kostelnik said she has been shoulder-bumped in just this past week, being unable to move away from the crowd. "It's imperative to remember, you are in a motor vehicle, you are going faster than a normal pedestrian walking, and even though you're not in a car, you should still follow those motor safety laws," Kostelnik said. Kostelnik hopes to see some changes made to ensure the safety of pedestrians before she feels fully comfortable with scooters around campus.
