About the job
- Five or more years of management experience in a heavy industrial service sector.
- Ability to walk more than 1,000 yards and stand for extended periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb stairs or ladders; stoop, crawl, reach, handle, push, pull, twist, kneel, and squat.
- Ability to see, speak, and hear; exercise problem solving, discretion, and independent judgment; and maintain regular and dependable attendance.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding scrap processing and production environment at an active steel mill, with exposure to natural elements.
- Ensure a safe workplace by modeling safety requirements in a scrap and slag yard, wearing proper personal protective equipment, and addressing employees who do not comply with personal protective equipment requirements.
- Lead the production team and manage each shift to maximize production and minimize costs.
- Prepare daily reports and provide information to management as needed; ensure inspections and operating checklists required of hourly employees are prepared and submitted appropriately.
- Meet key performance indicators and achieve or exceed efficiency and performance standards.
- Control and coordinate delegated mill service activities, including scrap unloading and loading; scrap breaking, shearing, and cutting in conjunction with the burning floor supervisor; rental work with personnel and equipment; environmental services; MR Plant operations; scrap inspection; timely rail services to the customer; and rail car repair.
- Ensure accurate completion of job-specific and employee-related paperwork, including toolbox talks, daily activity sheets, timesheets, and designated work permits.
- Ensure employee compliance with standard operating procedures for all production operations.
- Ensure employees follow all safety policies, procedures, and requirements while performing their duties.
- Implement and drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including environmental, safety, and health guidelines and best practices, and mitigate risks associated with contractor and vendor insurance and indemnification.
- Comply with cost-saving initiatives and identify ways to reduce costs and enhance revenue.
- Function as part of the management team and align with company core values to meet company policies and goals.
- Establish and maintain good housekeeping practices to eliminate hazards to employees.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Bachelor's degree.
