Accelerating workload mobility with Zero Copy Migrations using Nutanix Move.

Accelerating workload mobility with Zero Copy Migrations using Nutanix Move. September 29, 2026 6:00 am | 6 min Migrating Virtual Machines (VM) between different hypervisors historically meant copying the VM data over the network from the source to the target environments. This process can result in long migration data seeding times and often the whole migration plans revolve around how quickly the data can be copied. The Nutanix Move migration tool changes the paradigm in version 6.3 by integrating with leading storage vendor Everpure. The technology leverages Everpure's APIs to clone VMware vVol based virtual disks within the same FlashArray. This means the data stays in place, and migrations are designed to complete rapidly, often in minutes depending on the environment, configuration, and workload characteristics. Figure 1: An animation depicting the zero copy migration process at a high-level. Key Benefits of Zero Copy Migrations Zero Copy Migrations offer significant operational and economic advantages to organizations who want to migrate from VMware ESXi to Nutanix AHV while protecting their storage investments. * Speed and Efficiency: Designed to significantly reduce overall migration time by utilizing native array-level cloning. * Seamless Migration Scaling: Since the network bandwidth and the typical data seeding times do not come into play, large scale migration waves and enterprise VMs can be migrated efficiently and with minimal manual intervention. * Cost Savings: The zero copy migration approach is designed to maximize the existing storage array investments without requiring additional hardware for storage. The Zero Copy Migration Process Nutanix Move provides a streamlined process for performing Zero Copy Migrations in the migration planning workflow. * Configure Clusters and External Storage: Create Nutanix compute cluster and register with an Everpure FlashArray external storage which contains the vDisks of VMware VMs that are to be migrated. The Nutanix compute cluster connects to the Everpure FlashArray using NVMe/TCP protocol without the need for any direct-attached storage. The Move virtual appliance (or appliances) is deployed from a virtual machine image, usually to the target Nutanix cluster. * Add External Storage to Move: Enter the Everpure FlashArray details in Move Figure 2: Adding External Storage Vendor credentials to Move * Add Source and Target Details: Register both the source VMware ESXi host or vCenter and target Nutanix cluster details in Move. * Create a Migration Plan: Initiate a new Migration Plan and select Zero Copy Migrations as the Migration Type Figure 3: Select Zero Copy Migration in Migration Plan * Select Storage Array: Choose the Everpure Storage Arrays registered with the target AHV cluster hosting the VMs that need to be migrated. Then select the registered Nutanix Container for the target. * Select VMs for Migration: Move identifies potential VMs in the VM selection workflow. Users can select a set of VMs for migration. Any VM that is not eligible for Zero Copy migrations will be identified clearly: Figure 4: VM filtering and selection for Zero Copy Migration Move identifies the reason why some VMs are not eligible for Zero copy migration: Figure 5: Information icon identifies why some VMs are not migrateable using Zero Copy * VM Preparation and VM Settings: Once the VMs are selected for migrations, users select all the other required parameters for migration like the VM Network, VM preparation details, and various settings like IP/MAC retention, etc. Once the plan is ready the user is presented with a summary of the selections made. At this point the plan is ready for execution. * Migration Execution and Cutover Once a Zero Copy migration plan is triggered, Move performs a validation of the plan. Post validation, the VMs will be in the Preparation phase. Once the VMs are prepared, they are transitioned to 'Ready to Cutover' state as there is no data to copy or seed from source to target. The cutover process can be triggered manually or scheduled. When a cutover is triggered, the following actions are performed. * Move shuts down the source VMs and disconnects the virtual NICs. * Move creates a target VM with the similar configuration as the source VM and provisions it with empty placeholder vdisks that are similar to the source * Move triggers the Everpure FlashArray Clone APIs for each of the vdisks belonging to each of the VMs * Once the cloning is completed, Move powers on the target VM and performs the remaining VM config updates and target side preparation. The cutover process is streamlined because it does not involve any final delta sync of data. Neither does it involve any vDisk consolidation. Once the cutover completes, users can start managing the VMs from Nutanix Prism Central directly. * Rollback In the event that a migration needs to be rolled back, the original VMs are still available in the source environment, albeit with a note added to the VM and its vNIC disconnected. An operator can simply shutdown (or delete) the VM on the target site and then re-configure the original source VM before powering it on. This straightforward rollback methodology means that, should your migration wave not go to plan, you have the original position to fall back on, helping organizations address a common migration concern. Conclusion. Zero Copy Migrations from VMware vVols offer a streamlined and efficient path to migrate to Nutanix AHV for Everpure Flash Array customers. By eliminating data copying and disk format conversions, migrations are quick, repeatable and mitigate the risks associated with more manual methods. This process is designed to to help minimize temporary storage overhead associated with dual running source and target environments during migrations. Overall, it is a simplified, streamlined mechanism to migrate workloads and accelerate their evacuations from VMware to the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) infrastructure software stack with EverPure Flash Array storage. Nerdio Manager for Enterprise 8.2: modernize and operate Windows Cloud your way.

Nerdio Manager for Enterprise 8.2: modernize and operate Windows Cloud your way. There is no single path to Windows Cloud. Some organizations are moving quickly toward Windows 365. Others are expanding Azure Virtual Desktop across regions, modernizing existing infrastructure, or operating across multiple deployment models as their strategy evolves. Nerdio Manager for Enterprise 8.2 is built for that reality. This release gives IT teams more choice in where workloads run, more control as environments grow, and deeper visibility into how Windows Cloud is being used. It also continues to expand the automation, AI, and extensibility capabilities organizations need as their operating models evolve. Here are some of the biggest updates in Nerdio Manager 8.2. Modernize on your terms with expanded AVD Hybrid support. Modernization doesn't have to mean moving every workload to the public cloud at once. With Nerdio Manager 8.2, AVD Hybrid support for Nutanix is now generally available, giving organizations another way to bring the Azure Virtual Desktop experience to existing infrastructure while managing the environment through Nerdio. The release also adds Real-Time Insights for Nutanix host pools, faster session host deployment, and bulk management capabilities across Nutanix host pools and session hosts. And the AVD Hybrid story is expanding further. Preview support for VMware vSphere gives organizations with existing VMware environments another path to explore AVD while continuing to make use of their infrastructure investments. Together, these capabilities give IT teams greater flexibility to determine where workloads should run today while creating a path toward the Windows Cloud environment they want tomorrow. Operate distributed AVD environments as one. As AVD expands across host pools and locations, the environment shouldn't become exponentially harder to operate. Global Pools, available in Public Preview, gives organizations a higher-level way to manage distributed AVD environments across users, workloads, policies, and host pools. Nerdio Manager 8.2 significantly expands the Global Pools experience with percentage-based workload distribution, Entra ID attribute-based assignments, support for multiple Entra ID groups, bulk host pool creation, and consolidated assignment and failover policy management. Global Pools can also now work across more of the Nerdio platform, including Console Connect, Real-Time Insights, application deployment policies, and Host Pool Profiles. The goal is simple: As your AVD footprint grows, your operational complexity doesn't have to grow with it. Turn more Windows Cloud data into useful insight. Better decisions start with understanding what's actually happening across the environment. App Metering for Intune Insights, available in Public Preview, gives administrators visibility into application usage across managed devices. Instead of seeing only what is installed, IT teams can begin to understand what is actually being used. That insight can help organizations evaluate their application portfolio, identify applications with little or no usage, support application rationalization, and uncover potential license reclamation opportunities. Nerdio Manager 8.2 also introduces new reporting capabilities that bring data from across Windows Cloud into a more flexible reporting experience. Administrators can create reports using data across AVD, Windows 365, and Intune, helping teams answer questions specific to their environment without manually piecing together information from multiple places. Together, these capabilities give IT teams more context to understand what they have, how it's being used, and where there may be opportunities to optimize. Reduce everyday administration with self-service and automation. Not every routine action should require an IT ticket, and not every repeatable process should require an administrator to execute it manually. With Nerdio Manager 8.2, administrators can enable Windows 365 users to perform common actions on their assigned Cloud PCs directly through the Nerdio end-user portal. Users can reprovision, restore, and restart their Cloud PCs, while IT maintains control over whether self-service is available. Nerdio, Inc. is also taking Scripted Sequences further. Scripted Sequences already gives IT teams a way to orchestrate repeatable, multi-step administrative workflows. In 8.2, those workflows can execute reliably across substantially larger device populations, while dedicated RBAC controls provide more granular governance over who can view, manage, and execute automation. The result is less time spent managing individual tasks and more opportunity to operate the environment at scale. Build toward what's next. Windows Cloud operations aren't standing still. Infrastructure is increasingly managed through APIs and code. Automation continues to become more sophisticated. And organizations are beginning to explore how AI agents could interact with enterprise IT environments. Nerdio Manager 8.2 introduces the Nerdio Manager MCP server in Public Preview, providing an opt-in, read-only foundation for compatible AI systems to access supported Nerdio Manager data while keeping administrators in control. This initial release supports read-only access to supported Azure Virtual Desktop information through MCP. It's an early step toward more agentic IT workflows, built with enterprise visibility, permissions, and governance in mind. 8.2 also expands the underlying platform with a preview of the Nerdio Terraform module for supported AVD resources, broader REST API capabilities, Entra ID PIM support for Nerdio Manager roles, multiple REST API credentials, and greater visibility into Private Endpoint configuration. Together, these investments make it easier for organizations to integrate Nerdio into the automation, identity, infrastructure-as-code, and operational practices they already use. One platform for the Windows Cloud journey. Nerdio Manager for Enterprise 8.2 is about giving organizations more flexibility in how they move forward. Modernize existing infrastructure with AVD Hybrid. Operate distributed AVD environments more holistically with Global Pools. Understand application usage and operational data with App Metering and Reporting. Reduce routine work with Cloud PC self-service and scalable automation. And start building toward increasingly extensible and agentic Windows Cloud operations with MCP, APIs, Terraform, and deeper platform capabilities. Whether you're planning what comes next, deploying new workloads, optimizing an established environment, or evolving your long-term operating model, Nerdio Manager gives you one place to manage the Windows Cloud journey. More choice. More control. One Windows Cloud platform. Ready to explore everything new in Nerdio Manager 8.2?
