Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing and two years of clinical experience are required.
  • A Registered Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan is required.

  • Must be able to interpret regulatory standards and assess their impact on the organization.
  • Department-specific requirements may apply, such as PALS, BLS, or ACLS.
  • For Unit Coordinators in Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum at BMH and BBC, Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC is required within six months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring.
  • Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
  • Must be able to sustain alertness and concentration during interactive, repetitive, or detailed work, including operating a personal computer or CRT for 40 to 70 percent of the time.
  • Must regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or exert equivalent effort pushing, pulling, or handling materials, equipment, and other objects.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care and conduct or facilitate audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Coordinate day-to-day unit operations, including patient placements and staff assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel, ensuring assignments appropriately use personnel.
  • Coordinate department staff schedules with manager input as needed and adjust staffing day to day to meet needs, including volume changes and call-in replacements.
  • Facilitate staff attendance at organizational committees and meetings.
  • Manage staffing levels to help the department achieve its budget and participate in projecting staffing needs and creating a staffing plan with the manager or director.
  • Approve or deny paid time off and follow organizational staffing policies while communicating with staff about scheduling requests and issues.
  • Serve as a clinical expert resource, mentor staff, maintain positive relationships, and build teamwork across the healthcare team.
  • Maintain knowledge of guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards and provide input into them.
  • Act as the first responder for clinical and service-recovery issues and answer staff questions about job performance and departmental processes.
  • Guide and supervise personnel accountable to the nurse manager, provide ongoing job-performance feedback, monitor staff performance day to day, and work with the manager on Personal Development Plans and follow-up mentoring.
  • Act as a role model, coach, and mentor to staff; evaluate personnel performance; collate peer input for evaluations; communicate staff behavior and performance issues to the manager; and participate in employee discipline and evaluation processes as directed.
  • Co-facilitate planning and conduct shared-governance meetings and mentor the shared-governance staff chair.
  • Facilitate charge nurse and other unit meetings and report to the nurse manager.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including assisting the manager with interviews.
  • Create and support an environment that encourages and values innovation and creativity.
  • Serve as a leader and clinical liaison with staff, physicians, and management to provide continuity of day-to-day leadership.
  • Assist managers in attracting, developing, maintaining, and retaining qualified staff, including duties that may involve hiring, orientation, monitoring and evaluating performance, problem solving, employee counseling, staffing, payroll, and budget.
  • Serve as a contact for internal and external customers and maintain a safe environment of care that supports positive customer service and meets quality standards.
  • Implement new processes and monitor ongoing processes.
  • For Pre-Admission Surgery/Endo Screening, have patient contact by phone calls only.
  • Unit Coordinators may cover multiple locations across the organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Formal or informal leadership experience is preferred.
  • Advanced Nursing Specific Certification is preferred.
