- Graduate from an accredited ultrasonography program.
- Hold a required Basic Life Support certification.
- Hold an required American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (Sonography) registry.
- Have at least 1 year of experience.
- Prepare patients for ultrasound procedures and educate them throughout the ultrasound examination.
- Review patient medical history, record imaging results in patient records, and coordinate care with providers, hospital and clinic departments, and referring offices.
- Produce ultrasound studies meeting the quality required by the physician.
- Transfer studies to the reading station.
- Assist providers with questions regarding equipment and the reading station.
- Prepare patients for examinations.
- Obtain patient consent as needed using appropriate forms.
- Troubleshoot all testing equipment.
- Alert the clinic manager or director to equipment problems.
- Maintain Basic Life Support certification and assist the physician with codes and other patient emergencies.
- Maintain a neat and clean clinical area.
- Attend meetings and professional development programs as requested or needed.
- Follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act guidelines.
- Maintain patient and practice confidentiality.
- Maintain a professional demeanor with patients, caregivers, family members, providers, and coworkers.
- Perform other duties assigned by providers and the clinic manager or director.
- Work as a Maternal Fetal Medicine ultrasound technician.
- Maternal Fetal Medicine or high-risk pregnancy ultrasound experience is preferred.
