Requirements
  • A high school diploma, GED, or 10 years of work experience is required.
  • One year of health care experience is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • The role requires constant standing and walking, frequent communication, hearing, lifting or pushing objects weighing 0–25 pounds, reaching, gripping, keyboard use, data entry, and near and distance vision.
  • The role requires occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements, lifting or pushing objects weighing 25–50 pounds, moving patients, using smell to detect odors, and driving.
Responsibilities
  • Assist eye care providers in examining and treating patients.
  • Prepare patients for eye examinations and procedures.
  • Perform preliminary and other requested testing, including visual acuity, color vision, lensometry, keratometry, pupil-function testing, tonometry, automated perimetry, extra-ocular muscle evaluation, confrontation visual field testing, refraction, and other patient services.
  • Initiate documentation of the patient’s chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings.
  • Act as a scribe by documenting clinically relevant interactions and dialogue, including history and examination findings, diagnoses, orders, evaluation and management information, follow-up, and patient instructions.
  • Provide patient education under the direction of an eye care provider, including education about eye health, medications, and post-procedure care.
  • Assist with diagnostic imaging such as optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and visual field testing.
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures and office laser treatments, including applying and removing dressings as directed.
  • Document patient history and maintain accurate medical records in the electronic medical record system.
  • Inventory, maintain, and clean ophthalmic and surgical instruments and equipment according to system and department standards.
  • Screen patients and calls for emergency or urgent situations and obtain pertinent information for the provider.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification is strongly preferred, or the employee must be willing to obtain it within 18 months of hire.
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting is preferred.
