Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for Welder 1; technical education or certification is a plus.
  • Welder 1 requires 3-5 years of experience in welding and metal processing, including flux-cored arc welding and metal inert gas welding.
  • Welder 2 requires 5-10 years of experience in welding and metal processing, including flux-cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and multiple modes of transfer.
  • Welder 3 requires 10 or more years of experience in welding, metal processing, and structural fitting.
  • A 6G welding certification is required or eligibility for certification, depending on career level.
  • Welder 3 requires certification in 3G and 6G welding and gas tungsten arc welding for all materials, with proficiency in shielded metal arc welding.
  • Knowledge of pipe trade tools, including two-hole pins, center-finders, and pipe wraps, is required.
  • The role requires the ability to read and interpret process sheets, cut lists, tolerances, technical drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, bills of materials, specifications, and written procedures.
  • The role requires mechanical aptitude, proficiency with established fixtures and tools, and the ability to perform intermediate or advanced mathematical calculations, including trigonometry and geometry, as applicable to career level.
  • The role requires the ability to lift, move, or carry 50 pounds and work in dusty, noisy, hazardous, high, tight, and confined spaces and in all types of weather.
  • The role requires working knowledge of trade materials and tools and the ability to climb, balance, squat, kneel, and crouch.
Responsibilities
  • Operate welding and fabrication machinery and welding hand tools, including calipers, weld gauges, and tape measures.
  • Read and follow blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, weld symbols, bills of materials, and written procedures to create equipment and products accurately.
  • Follow piping and instrumentation diagrams for assembly tracks on projects.
  • Create weldment setups and fixturing to meet geometric requirements.
  • Inspect products for compliance, document results, and maintain equipment as required.
  • Operate lift trucks and overhead cranes safely and efficiently.
  • Perform X-ray-quality welds on process piping, hydronics, and pressure vessels.
  • Fit up X-ray-quality weld joints using shop blueprints.
  • Weld light metals, non-ferrous metals, and structural metals as required by career level.
  • Weld in confined spaces using mirrors as required.
  • Fully program welding robots at Welder 3 level.
  • Apply ASME pressure vessel and piping requirements and weld to B31.1, B31.3, and B31.9 criteria.
  • Operate and evaluate fixtures and recommend enhancements to improve workflow and quality.
  • Troubleshoot welding issues and recommend effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet production schedules and performance goals.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, shop regulations, and company policies and procedures, and stop work when unsafe conditions are present.
  • Support Lean and Continuous Improvement efforts and process enhancements.
  • At Welder 3 level, lead small teams, collaborate with foremen to meet production goals, and communicate job status to the shop superintendent.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Technical education or certification is a plus.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior welders.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of continuous improvement initiatives and actively participate in Lean and Continuous Improvement process enhancements.
