Requirements
  • Personal, first-hand experience receiving mental health services related to mental health, emotional health, or trauma resulting in significant life disruption.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist or complete the Core Elements of Young Adult Peer Mentoring training within 6 months of hire, and must become a Certified Peer Specialist within 1 year of hire.
  • One year of experience working with youth and young adults.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license is required at employment; incumbents must be at least 21 years old, have held a valid United States driver's license for at least one year, pass a driver's screening background check, maintain a safe driving record, and maintain adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, lift at least 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques or a two-person lift, operate office equipment, assist clients with activities of daily living, and communicate with clients, staff, and external representatives.
  • CPR certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • NET certification is required.
  • Certified Peer Specialist credential is required within 12 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile, the DMH Child Youth and Family and Adult services systems, person-centered and strengths-based recovery-oriented practices, peer support practices and ethical standards, community resources, engagement and participatory planning techniques, advocacy techniques, legal and human rights, and personal computer applications and equipment.
  • Ability to assist youth and young adults with service planning, create supportive relationships, use evidence-based approaches, maintain confidentiality, work independently and collaboratively, use crisis intervention and relapse prevention techniques, balance competing priorities, and make independent judgments and decisions.
  • Willingness to use and share personal practical experience of recovery, wellness management, and the effort required to support a full and satisfying community life.
  • Ability to mediate and resolve conflicts and sensitivity to cultural, religious, ethnic, disability, and gender or gender-identity differences.
Responsibilities
  • Support youth and young adults in engaging with services, supports, and community activities while promoting self-determination and shared decision-making.
  • Share personal experiences and provide non-directive support, coaching, and modeling to improve service engagement and access to services, providers, recovery tools, and resources.
  • Provide individual peer mentoring to 5–10 youth and young adults using the Young Adult Peer Mentoring Practice Profile.
  • Provide core staffing for the Access Center, engage youth and young adults during drop-in hours, and staff activities and events.
  • Welcome youth and young adults, provide peer support, and orient them to available services in collaboration with facilitators and Access Center staff.
  • Facilitate recurring peer support groups on topics relevant to youth and young adults in an open and mutual environment.
  • Assist the Peer Leadership Coordinator with recruiting for and supporting the Young Adult Leadership Council.
  • Help plan events and training opportunities for Access Center staff, youth and young adults, and the broader community based on identified needs.
  • Conduct outreach and marketing to educate youth and young adults and community stakeholders about the program and services, including direct outreach and creating and distributing marketing materials.
  • Attend community events and activities to engage youth and young adults and explain available benefits and supports.
  • Help identify and access services and providers that benefit youth and young adults.
  • Help youth and young adults develop supportive relationships, community connections, self-sufficiency, positive employment behaviors, life skills, self-advocacy skills, and effective coping and self-help strategies.
  • Help youth and young adults identify goals involving education, employment, family relationships, spirituality, and social recreation and integrate them into service planning.
  • Help youth and young adults communicate and work effectively with service providers, employers, natural supports, family members, and others.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and wellness practices, including addressing substance use.
  • Use Gathering and Inspiring Future Talent, Wellness Recovery Action Plan, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and other evidence-informed or evidence-based models as trained.
  • Use lived experience purposefully and in a strengths-based manner to promote discovery, recovery, hope, and future focus.
  • Serve as a bridge between child or young-adult mental health service systems on behalf of youth and young adults.
  • Maximize choices, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Attend in-service training and staff meetings and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Access Center staff and other area Access Centers under the leadership of the Access Center Program Director.

  • Bilingual and bicultural background or experience.
