South Korea's AI stock rally is reshaping multiple aspects of society, from dating preferences to university choices. Semiconductor company employees, particularly from SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, have become highly sought-after romantic partners due to substantial bonuses. SK Hynix agreed to share 10% of its operating profit, equating to roughly 700 million won per employee—over 15 times the average Korean annual salary. Both companies' shares have surged approximately 95% and 135% respectively this year. The trend has spawned a dating reality show matching Samsung and SK Hynix employees, which garnered around 650,000 views. Netflix released "Rookie Kim's Stock Market Mission" following a comedian's trading journey. At Seoul National University, electrical and computer engineering enrolment jumped dramatically, with 90% of undeclared engineering students choosing this major in 2024, compared to 30% in 2023.
Mistral is set to announce a €3bn Series D round led by Samsung, with participation from Nvidia, ASML and the European Union’s Scaleup Fund
Samsung Electronics America and Smartify Media have announced a strategic partnership to transform commercial displays into revenue-generating advertising platforms. The collaboration integrates Smartify's digital out-of-home advertising network directly into Samsung's Visual eXperience Transformation (VXT) content management system. Through Samsung VXT Ads, Powered by Smartify, display owners can access local, direct, and national advertising campaigns without additional hardware or costs. The integration allows businesses to monetise screen time whilst maintaining control over their own content and scheduling. Smartify operates a premium urban and retail media network spanning over 40 US markets, generating billions of monthly impressions across storefronts, shopping centres, and consumer environments. The partnership targets multiple industries including retail, commercial real estate, automotive services, hospitality, and restaurants. The integration has already begun rolling out across Smartify's network, with Samsung VXT-powered displays actively participating in the advertising marketplace.
Samsung Electronics' stock fell 9% on Monday after the company's shareholder return plan disappointed investors expecting more aggressive buybacks and clearer capital deployment guidance. Samsung announced total shareholder returns of 90 trillion won to 110 trillion won ($65 billion to $80 billion), with 30 trillion won in third-quarter cash dividends. The board will determine remaining payouts in January 2027. Despite being five times Samsung's 2020 returns, analysts said the figures missed projections. Samsung's ownership structure complicates buybacks, as significant repurchases could push Samsung Life and Samsung Fire stakes above the 10% regulatory limit. Most of the outstanding 60 trillion won to 80 trillion won will likely return via dividends rather than buybacks. Rival SK Hynix recently pledged a more direct buyback commitment, promising to repurchase and retire 40 trillion won in treasury shares. Samsung Life and Samsung Fire fell 9.9% and 8% respectively, whilst the KOSPI index declined 3.1%.
South Korean chip stocks led an Asian semiconductor selloff on Wednesday as rising bond yields intensified concerns over Big Tech spending. The Kospi index plunged as much as 6.8%, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each falling over 7%. A Bloomberg gauge of Asian semiconductor stocks declined more than 2%. Japanese chipmakers also suffered, with Kioxia Holdings dropping up to 11%, while Tokyo Electron and Advantest also fell. The losses followed declines in US semiconductor and AI-related shares as inflation worries and rising government debt kept bond yields elevated. "Higher rates and geopolitical risk are making investors less willing to pay a premium for that growth," said Jung In Yun, chief executive officer at Fibonacci Asset Management Global.
