About the company

Nokia makes the equipment and software that mobile carriers, cloud companies, and businesses use to run networks, from cell-tower radios to fiber links between AI data centers. From 1998 to 2011 it was the world's largest mobile phone maker; it sold that business to Microsoft in 2014, and HMD Global, a separate company, makes Nokia-branded phones under license. Its network unit sells optical systems that send data over fiber, internet routers, and broadband gear, and its mobile unit sells radios and the core software that runs 5G networks. Nokia earns money from equipment and service contracts and from licensing its patents to phone makers and carmakers. It was founded in 1865 as a wood pulp mill and is based in Espoo, Finland.

Cadence and Nokia advance AI-driven electronic system design.

Cadence and Nokia advance AI-driven electronic system design. Key takeaways. * Nokia is running Cadence's AuraStack AI Super Agent on the Millennium M2000 AI supercomputer, delivering a 5x acceleration of core design and analysis tasks. * The solution fuses agentic AI, GPU-optimized EDA software, and scalable accelerated hardware in a fully on-premises, data-secure environment. * AuraStack automates schematic capture, placement, routing and multi-objective optimization using NVIDIA Nemotron open-model AI. * Cadence's computational stack leverages CUDA-X, cuDSS, and NVIDIA Omniverse to speed power-integrity, thermal, EM and circuit-simulation flows. * The modular Millennium architecture lets Nokia expand compute capacity and run multiple AI-driven workloads in parallel, establishing a new template for large-scale electronic-system design. Cadence-Nokia partnership powers ai-first electronic system design. Why the move to AI matters. Designing modern heterogeneous electronic systems - 5G radios, automotive ASICs, IoT edge modules - requires simultaneous trade-offs across power, timing, thermal and electromagnetic domains. Traditional manual or rule-based flows struggle to explore the combinatorial design space within realistic project timelines. By embedding agentic AI directly into the design kernel, Cadence enables Nokia to evaluate thousands of alternatives in minutes rather than weeks, shortening time-to-market while safeguarding proprietary data behind an on-premises fence. Architecture overview. 1. Agentic AI - AuraStack Super Agent. * Core model: NVIDIA Nemotron open-model foundation, fine-tuned on Cadence's electronic-design datasets. * Functions automated: schematic capture, component placement, detailed routing, multi-objective (power-delay-area) optimization. * Outcome: 5x faster completion of typical "place-and-route" runs (e.g., a 12-hour manual flow reduced to ~2.4 h). 2. Computational software - gpu-optimized EDA stack. | Cadence Module | GPU Library | Primary Acceleration Target | | Power Integrity | CUDA-X + cuDSS | IR-drop & EM-analysis | | Thermal Modeling | CUDA-X | 3-D heat-spread simulation | | EM Characterization | CUDA-X | Full-wave S-parameter extraction | | Circuit Simulation | NVIDIA Omniverse | Real-time transient analysis | * Performance metric: Benchmarks show up to 8x reduction in simulation wall-time for 10 M-gate mixed-signal blocks versus CPU-only runs. 3. Accelerated computing - Millennium M2000 platform. * Compute fabric: 4 x NVIDIA H100 Tensor-Core GPUs (each 60 TFLOPS FP64, 1 PFLOPS FP16). * Memory: 1.5 TB high-bandwidth DDR5 + 256 GB HBM2e per GPU. * Scalability: Modular chassis allow incremental addition of GPU nodes; capacity can grow from 4 to 16 GPUs without re-architecting the software stack. How Nokia leverages the stack. Parallel ai-driven workloads. Nokia runs multiple AuraStack instances concurrently - one for RF front-end layout, another for power-delivery network (PDN) optimization, and a third for thermal-aware floorplanning. The shared M2000 fabric schedules these jobs dynamically, ensuring maximal GPU utilization (> 85 % average) and eliminating idle compute windows. Secure, on-premises deployment. All AI models, design files and simulation results remain inside Nokia's data center, complying with ISO 27001 and GDPR requirements. The platform uses encrypted inter-node communication and role-based access controls, eliminating the risk associated with cloud-only AI services. Comparative snapshot: AI-Enhanced vs. Conventional flow. | Metric | Conventional CPU-Centric Flow | AI-Enhanced AuraStack Flow | | Place-and-Route Time | 12 h (typical) | 2.4 h (5x faster) | | Power-Integrity Simulation | 8 h per iteration | 1 h per iteration | | Thermal Analysis (3-D) | 6 h | 0.75 h | | Design Iterations per Week | 2-3 | 10-12 | | IP Exposure Risk | Cloud-based SaaS (higher) | On-premises, encrypted (lower) | All figures are based on Nokia's internal benchmark suite for a 7 nm RF-SoC design. Bottom line. By coupling Cadence's AuraStack AI Super Agent with the Millennium M2000 GPU supercomputer, Nokia has built a self-contained, AI-first design environment that slashes critical workflow times by up to 5x while preserving strict data security. The three-layer stack - agentic AI, GPU-accelerated EDA software, and modular high-performance hardware - creates a scalable foundation that other systems-level companies can emulate to meet the escalating complexity of next-generation electronic products.

PECC Summit: Nokia links AI optics scaling to InP fab expansion.

PECC Summit: Nokia links AI optics scaling to InP fab expansion. Nokia's Mehrdad Ziari ties AI optical scaling to InP integration, a 1.6T LPO demonstration and sustained investment in fab capacity. Scaling AI optical connectivity requires sustained investment in photonic integration and manufacturing capacity, alongside faster devices, according to Mehrdad Ziari, Nokia's Senior Vice President, Optical Modules. Speaking at the PECC Summit in Sunnyvale on October 20, Ziari connected Nokia's indium phosphide (InP) fab expansion with its work on lower-power optical modules, heterogeneous integration and simpler network deployment. He urged customers and suppliers to engage earlier, warning that manufacturing investments can require three to five years while customers may seek new capabilities within 12-18 months. Ziari highlighted a monolithic InP photonic integrated circuit (PIC) combining four lasers, eight modulators, eight semiconductor optical amplifiers and power monitors. Nokia's ECOC 2026 demonstration delivered eight lanes at 200 Gbps per lane in a linear pluggable optics (LPO) OSFP module consuming 8.6 W - approximately 5.4 pJ/bit at an aggregate 1.6 Tbps. He also described a heterogeneous tunable laser combining InP gain with silicon-photonic wavelength control, demonstrating more than 50 nm of tuning. Across coherent optics generations, Ziari cited an approximately tenfold improvement in power efficiency per decade, driven by photonic integration, higher symbol rates, modulation advances and system co-design; the chart also included future projections. The manufacturing roadmap spans Nokia's legacy Sunnyvale fab, a new six-inch InP fab in San Jose, and the planned conversion of an existing Chandler, Arizona, compound-semiconductor facility to six-inch InP production. The three facilities span 60,000, 185,000 and 1.1 million square feet, respectively - approximately 5,600, 17,200 and 102,200 square meters. These are facility footprints, rather than directly comparable production-capacity figures. Nokia's previously disclosed Chandler agreement provides for an initial lease of manufacturing capacity from early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, with acquisition of the full site expected in Q1 2029. Ziari said scaling also requires automated manufacturing, reliable packaging and installation processes suited to millions of optical connections. | Nokia at PECC | Integration, Power and Production | | 1.6T LPO | - ECOC demonstration: 8 x 200 Gbps in OSFP; 8.6 W power consumption, equivalent to approximately 5.4 pJ/bit at 1.6 Tbps. | | Monolithic InP | - Four lasers, eight modulators, eight SOAs and power monitors integrated on one PIC. | | Hybrid laser | - InP gain plus silicon-photonic wavelength control; more than 50 nm tuning, with a SiN-based athermal wavelength meter/locker and booster SOA. | | Efficiency roadmap | - Ziari cited approximately 10x improvement per decade. The chart is normalized to first-generation coherent optics and includes optics, RFIC and packaging; later points include projections. | | Manufacturing | - San Jose: six-inch (approximately 150 mm) InP wafers. Chandler: planned conversion from six-inch GaN/SiC manufacturing to InP. | | Deployment | - Co-design, packaging, liquid cooling, reliability and simpler installation must advance alongside component performance. | "We need to talk together more," said Ziari, calling for earlier collaboration between customers and the optical supply chain. Analysis. Ziari's examples connect two distinct integration strategies. Monolithic InP combines light generation, modulation and amplification on a single photonic chip, while heterogeneous integration combines InP gain with silicon-based wavelength-control functions. His presentation treated these as complementary tools for different applications. The LPO demonstration illustrates the potential of integrated devices and linear drive to reduce module power, but the displayed result does not establish the power of a complete host-to-host link or an entire AI fabric. Manufacturing and deployment impose separate scaling requirements. Larger facility footprints do not by themselves establish wafer output, yield or qualified module shipments, and the Chandler conversion remains a future program. Ziari's call for earlier customer engagement reflects the mismatch between multiyear fab investment and shorter product-request cycles. His emphasis on reliability, simplified installation and AI-enabled manufacturing also broadens the discussion beyond device speed to the practical work of producing, testing and operating optical connections at volume. | Company Profile | Nokia | | Company | Public company · NYSE: NOK | | Headquarters | Espoo, Finland | | President and CEO | Justin Hotard | | Business | Fixed, mobile, IP, optical, data-center and network-automation infrastructure. | | Optical capabilities | Coherent transport, pluggable optics, InP PICs, optical modules, DSPs and packaging. | | Manufacturing focus | U.S. InP fab expansion; planned Chandler conversion and acquisition remain subject to the disclosed transaction timetable. | | Related Converge Digest Coverage | | October 22, 2026 AI networking | Nokia AI Orders Hit €1.5 Billion as Optical and IP Growth Accelerates Connects optical demand with customer wins and manufacturing execution. | | September 19, 2026 Optical components | ECOC: Nokia Brings 1.6T LPO, 448G/Lane and Coherent Frontends Establishes the demonstration portfolio discussed at PECC. | | September 15, 2026 Coherent optics | Telxius Deploys Nokia 800G Coherent Pluggables Shows commercial deployment of Nokia optical modules in IP-over-DWDM networks. | | September 4, 2026 Optical transport | Maxis Deploys Nokia PSE-6 Optical Transport Provides system-level context for coherent integration and network capacity. | | October 21, 2026 AI interconnects | PECC Summit: Lumentum Puts Lasers at the Center of AI Interconnect Design Examines complementary laser-placement, power and serviceability requirements. | Converge Digest is tracking advances in optical networking and AI interconnects.
