Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • A minimum of two years of nursing experience is required.
  • Emergency Department experience is required.
  • Applicants must meet all requirements of the DUHS Career Ladder Program for level IV.
  • Current or compact registered nurse licensure in North Carolina is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Training must be obtained within three months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the scope of practice of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and unlicensed staff is required.
  • Knowledge and appropriate application of the nursing process is required.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and procedures is required.
  • Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families is required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team members, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others is required.
  • Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care is required.
  • Competence in Basic Life Support and other specialized life-support requirements designated by the work area is required.
  • Ability to document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations, and re-evaluations of patient status is required.
  • Ability to use computers and learn new software programs is required.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking is required.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients is required.
  • Working knowledge of infection-control procedures and safety precautions is required.
  • Working knowledge and completion of The Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements are required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the nurse manager with leadership, staffing, patient flow, quality, and daily unit operations.
  • Plan and provide advanced or specialized nursing care for patients in accordance with the Nursing Clinical Ladder Program and North Carolina Board of Nursing guidelines.
  • Provide local-level leadership in administration, education, informatics, and quality.
  • Identify care needs for patient populations across the continuum of care.
  • Collaborate on and provide leadership in developing standards of care, patient and family education, and staff education for specific populations.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and provide leadership in delivering patient care.
  • Provide leadership in educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, and other health-related projects.
  • Evaluate, direct, and guide the selection, use, care, and control of material resources.
  • Appraise the quality and effectiveness of materials and equipment and collaborate with appropriate departments on vendor selection and performance feedback.
  • Guide the professional growth of others through role modeling, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Design orientation modules and serve as the primary preceptor for senior nursing students when required.
  • Provide leadership for departmental, organizational, community, or regional and national initiatives focused on improving quality of care and developing staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews.
  • Recommend personnel actions, including hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and related activities.
  • Monitor clinical practice and ensure compliance with practice and regulatory standards.
  • Influence recruitment and staff development.
  • Plan and deliver in-house education sessions or collaborate with subject-matter experts.
  • Assess staff educational needs and partner with clinical nurse educators and clinical nurse specialists to address them.
  • Serve as a superuser for clinical information systems.
  • Communicate technology adoption and changes to staff, facilitate service tickets, troubleshoot efficiency concerns, and provide unit training and technology support.
  • Facilitate adoption of new technology on the unit.
  • Analyze patient-care data with subject-matter experts to identify trends and improvement areas.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary committees focused on quality and patient safety.
  • Provide nursing staff with guidance and support regarding quality assurance and best practices.
  • Engage in research and innovation initiatives to develop methodologies and technologies that enhance patient care.
  • Lead change by seeking creative solutions to improve quality and efficiency in patient care delivery.
