Schwarzman on Blackstone's founding: $400K in capital, 500 letters and no clients

Stephen Schwarzman and Pete Peterson founded Blackstone in 1985 with $200,000 each, opening on October 1 with $400,000 in capital. The name combines "Schwarz," meaning "black," and "Petro," meaning "stone." The firm rested on three pillars: a boutique advising on mergers and acquisitions, a leveraged buyout fund, and new ventures led by a "10 out of 10" person. Its 1988 asset management launch, led by Larry Fink, later grew into BlackRock. Early business was hard to win. None of more than 500 launch letters brought in work, as clients feared having to justify choosing a newcomer over the large financial houses they relied on. Blackstone had said it would raise $1 billion for its buyout fund but gathered only $175 million in the US. Japan, Schwarzman says, rescued the firm.

Bloomberg reports that Allianz Global Investors is the lead buyer in the transaction, alongside StepStone Group. The vehicle holds assets from Blackstone Capital Opportunities Fund IV, which completed fundraising in 2022. The original fund delivered a net internal rate of return of 11% as of 30 June, according to Blackstone's latest financial disclosures. Evercore advised Blackstone on the transaction. Some loans will remain held by other Blackstone-managed funds. Blackstone and Allianz declined to comment, whilst Evercore and StepStone did not respond to requests for comment.
