About the Job

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in systems engineering and automotive functional safety using ISO 26262, including requirements generation.
  • At least 3 years of experience in system architecture for safety-critical systems.
  • At least 3 years of experience working on fault-management or diagnostics systems for automotive applications.
  • Ability to read C code and write Python and MATLAB code.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the system-level safety architecture and requirements for the autonomy hardware and firmware of the Nuro Driver, ensuring compliance with ISO 26262 and ISO 21448.
  • Decompose vehicle-level Safety Goals into a Functional Safety Concept and refine it into a Technical Safety Concept, defining system-level safety mechanisms, fault-detection and reaction strategies, and safe states.
  • Develop the system-level SOTIF specification for the autonomy hardware and firmware, defining performance targets and acceptance criteria for safety-critical autonomy sensors and compute.
  • Lead, perform, and review system-level safety analyses, including Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Dependent Failure Analysis, to identify risks and derive safety requirements.
  • Work with controls, embedded software, and hardware teams and external partners to review and recommend changes to existing requirements and test plans.
  • Support verification and validation by reviewing and suggesting additional tests and implementing test cases in software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop environments.
  • Analyze and interpret test data from simulation, hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop testing, and on-road vehicle testing to validate safety mechanisms and identify residual risks.
  • Support and maintain sections of the overall Safety Case pertaining to platform systems using Goal Structuring Notation and focusing on residual-risk assessment and clear argumentation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Background in autonomous vehicles or advanced driver-assistance systems.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and methods such as STPA and ISO 21448.
  • Experience developing and articulating a Safety Case based on UL 4600.
  • Experience testing in hardware-in-the-loop environments or conducting on-road testing.

About the Company

Nuro

Builds self-driving systems for vehicle makers

Nuro builds and licenses self-driving technology to automakers and mobility companies for robotaxis, commercial fleets and personal vehicles. Its Nuro Driver combines AI software with vehicle sensors and computing hardware, so partners integrate an autonomous driving system into their own vehicles. The software interprets road conditions and controls movement, while the Nuro Toolkit supplies tools for simulation, testing and fleet monitoring. Nuro earns money by licensing its technology, drawing on experience from autonomous delivery vehicles rather than operating only a goods-delivery service. It was founded in 2016 and has its headquarters in Mountain View, California.
