  • Current active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta or a professional association relating to the degree.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • CHPCN certification, or current enrollment in the CHPCN Certificate program with graduation within two years, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in a hospice or palliative care setting.
  • At least three years of experience performing charge duties and responsibilities.
  • Two to three years of supervisory experience in a healthcare setting, preferably hospice or palliative care.
  • Effective written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to review clinical work according to professional standards and practice guidelines.
  • Strong client service and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of good body mechanics.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, carry, and bend to move residents.
Responsibilities
  • Organize, develop, and manage the nursing department, including cost management, personnel, materials, productivity, and work quality.
  • Work with the Clinical Nurse Leader to plan resident care according to organizational strategic objectives and priorities.
  • Provide leadership for new admissions and complex cases.
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead family meetings.
  • Manage nursing-related discipline and grievances in collaboration with Employee Relations.
  • Hire, orient, supervise, and coach direct reports.
  • Prepare and deliver nursing team performance reviews.
  • Investigate complaints and make recommendations regarding incidents, errors, and near misses.
  • Ensure nursing standard operating procedures are communicated and followed.
  • Review the nursing budget and report unusual variances to the Executive Director.
  • Maintain medical supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain statistics for Alberta Health Services reporting.
  • Maintain weekly nursing-section communication processes.
  • Ensure Infection Prevention and Control protocols are consistently followed.
  • Direct nursing services and supervise personnel.
  • Conduct or ensure formal interviews, tours, and meetings with potential residential hospice clients before placement when needed.
  • Coordinate with the Manager of Hospice Operations and Hospice Access regarding special-consideration admissions, transfers to emergency or acute care, requests to leave the facility, and use of emergency medical services.
  • Provide leadership and management for resident and family care with the Clinical Nurse Leader.
  • Schedule, assign workloads, and manage nursing-section personnel when the Clinical Nurse Leader is absent.
  • Assess nursing requirements to ensure resident care needs are met.
  • Resolve scheduling needs with the Unit Clerk when the Clinical Nurse Leader is absent.
  • Ensure regular breaks are offered and provide coverage when necessary.
  • Coordinate nursing assignments for all shifts and delegate workloads according to acuity levels.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for questions and concerns during working hours and resolve immediate differences.
  • Provide timely verbal and written communication to nursing-section members.
  • Assess nursing practices and techniques and recommend changes, development, or education.
  • Delegate and follow up on Charge Nurse tasks.
  • Assist on the floor temporarily when workload intensity is high.
  • Establish and maintain standards of care and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Ensure nursing audits and accreditation requirements are completed on time.
  • Lead complex or demanding resident and family situations.
  • Ensure sufficient weekend and holiday pharmacy requests.
  • Balance nursing-section task assignments and fulfill residents' special requests.
  • Attend Calgary Zone meetings and interprofessional rounds as required.
  • Prepare annual budgets and plan nursing-section staffing, recruitment, retention, and scheduling strategies.
  • Monitor section performance against goals and take corrective action under the collective agreement and applicable legislation.
  • Prepare and provide performance appraisals, identify employee strengths and limitations, and support professional development and further education.
  • Submit nursing statistics in accordance with Salvation Army and Alberta Health Services requirements.
  • Lead employee and client complaints and investigations for the nursing department.
  • Conduct investigations and provide recommendations except when named in the complaint.
  • Ensure documentation and approvals for WCB or disability claims, incident reports, paid and unpaid leaves, and overtime requests.
  • Monitor nursing labor, supply, and daily expenditure costs against the approved budget and report unfavorable variances.
  • Coordinate appropriate medical supply ordering, stocking, and organization within budget requirements.
  • Respond immediately to safety concerns.
  • Notify the Executive Director or designate when a critical incident occurs.
  • Ensure incident reports and WCB forms are provided following occupational health and safety incidents.
  • Ensure incident reports are initiated for resident-related incidents.
  • Coordinate facility needs with Maintenance through the Clinical Nurse Leader and Unit Clerk.
  • Plan and lead nursing-section meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Promote the hospice's professional reputation by presenting at palliative or hospice conferences where possible.
Desired Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree in nursing with an emphasis in palliative care.
  • Supervisory experience in a hospice or palliative care setting.
