Boeing urges US to challenge record $3.4B EIB loan to Airbus

The European Investment Bank's €3 billion loan to Airbus has sparked a dispute between Boeing and the EU. Boeing has asked the US government to challenge the loan package, which will fund aircraft research and development through 2030. The first tranche of €1 billion has already been signed. Boeing claims the loan — the EIB's largest ever corporate financing — may violate a 2021 truce agreement between the rivals. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said his office is examining the loan and has raised concerns with EU officials. The EIB and Airbus both maintain the loan operates on standard market terms. Airbus CFO Thomas Toepfer stated the financing was secured completely on market conditions.

The Toulouse-based manufacturer delivered 351 aircraft in the first half, having faced engine supply constraints and parts shortages earlier in the year.

Airbus A350 breaks record with 24-hour test flight for Qantas's Sydney-London route

Airbus has completed a record-breaking 24-hour test flight for its new A350-1000ULR airliner, designed for Qantas Airways' ultra-long-haul routes. The aircraft flew from Melbourne to Toulouse on 27-28 July, covering 12,460 nautical miles in 24 hours and 25 minutes. The plane features an extra fuel tank carrying 20,900 litres, extending its range by 1,000 nautical miles. This enables Qantas's planned nonstop flights between Sydney and London or New York, scheduled to begin in 2027 under Project Sunrise. More than 3.6 million people tracked the return flight on Flightradar24, making it the second-most-tracked flight ever. Qantas has ordered 12 aircraft, each configured to carry 238 passengers with over 40% of seats allocated to premium classes.

Airbus unveils 30% fuel-saving folding wing design while Boeing focuses on 737 MAX production

Airbus and Boeing presented contrasting strategies at the Farnborough airshow near London. Airbus unveiled plans for a successor to its A320 jet, featuring a "wing of tomorrow" designed to cut fuel consumption by up to 30%. The European manufacturer aims to launch the new aircraft in the second half of next decade. Boeing is taking a more cautious approach, focusing on improving its existing 737 MAX rather than developing a new aircraft. The company cited three prerequisites for launching new planes: financial stability, technological readiness, and market maturity. Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg said airlines are prioritising better performance from current fleets over new designs. The company is working to increase 737 production from 38 to 47 planes monthly, which generates 70% of its cashflow. Engine manufacturers, including CFM International, are developing technologies to serve both approaches.
