About the company

Astranis builds and operates small satellites that supply internet capacity to telecommunications companies, large enterprises, and government customers. Its MicroGEO spacecraft work in geostationary orbit, staying above the same region so customers receive continuous coverage without a large moving constellation. The company designs and manufactures satellites in-house, runs their ground networks, and earns revenue by leasing capacity or managing complete connectivity services. Its infrastructure supports cellular backhaul, aircraft connectivity, and broadband links in remote areas where ground networks are difficult to build. Astranis was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Customers remain partners: Astranis sells wholesale capacity without selling bandwidth directly to consumers.
  • Production has fresh backing: Astranis raised $300 million in Series E equity in May 2026.
  • Employees share private-company upside: Astranis says ownership is distributed broadly across its team.

What critics are saying

  • Engineering starts costly: Astranis's high orbits require radiation protection that ordinary computer hardware lacks.
  • Orbit delivery adds complexity: Astranis carries propulsion because medium-class rockets cannot reach its high-orbit destinations.
  • Remote flexibility is limited: Astranis says its team works in person five days every week.

What makes Astranis unique

  • Astranis changes capacity after launch: its proprietary radio reallocates bandwidth and power across seven gigahertz.
  • Short missions suit UtilitySat: Astranis reserves its multi-band satellite for assignments lasting up to one year.
  • Astranis targets jam-resistant military links: it is implementing the Space Force's protected tactical waveform.

Space firms raise $11.3B in six months and snap up factories and campuses on Earth

Space companies are snapping up factories and campuses on Earth as investment in the sector surges. Firms such as Varda Space Industries, Sierra Space and Astranis raised $11.3B in venture capital in the first half of the year, and global private venture investment in space is expected to hit a record $100B this year. Demand is most intense in South Bay, Los Angeles. Varda leased a 205,000 SF former Mattel factory in El Segundo in March, and JLL's Mac Burridge is tracking 5M SF of advanced manufacturing demand there. New spaces can take up to 24 months to get enough power. Florida and Texas are also seeing new projects. Blue Origin announced a 1.3M SF, $550M satellite manufacturing campus in Hutto, Texas, promising 2,000 jobs. The US Department of Transportation expects 10,000 annual launches and reentries by 2035, up from 250 in 2025.

Astranis secures $468M US loan to boost satellite manufacturing capacity

San Francisco-based satellite manufacturer Astranis has secured a $468 million credit facility from the U.S. Export-Import Bank to expand its domestic production capacity. The loan, approved last week, aims to help the company meet growing international demand for sovereign satellite capabilities. Astranis currently operates five small geostationary satellites and has a backlog exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts. The company serves customers in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Thailand. The financing falls under EXIM's Make More in America Initiative, which focuses on national security investments. Other recent aerospace beneficiaries of the programme include Beta Technologies and CesiumAstro. "In order to lead across the globe, America must lead in space," EXIM chairman John Jovanovic stated.

Astranis to supply micro GEO satellite to Saudi's STC.

Astranis to supply micro GEO satellite to Saudi's STC. Satellite to launch next year September 15, 2026 Micro GEO satellite operator Astranis has signed a new capacity deal with Saudi telecoms firm STC. Astranis and STC have announced a partnership to deploy a dedicated satellite serving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The satellite, part of Astranis' Block 3, is scheduled to launch in 2027. "As STC plays a key role in advancing Saudi Arabia's digital infrastructure, space has become a critical layer of our ecosystem, with dedicated satellite capacity central to how we deliver resilient, reliable, and secure connectivity across the country," said Mohammad Alabbadi, group chief carrier & wholesale officer at STC Group. "Astranis' speed and flexibility made them the right partner for this stage of that work. Together, we are setting a new benchmark for secure and reliable connectivity supporting the Kingdom's digital vision." Astranis develops micro GEO satellites - satellites in geostationary orbits that are much smaller than traditional machines at such high orbits. Astranis' satellites are often measured in the hundreds of kilograms, compared to traditional GEO satellites that can weigh multiple tons. The company currently has five of its micro GEO satellites in orbit, and recently announced new projects with customers including Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan and MB Group in Oman, set to launch later this year. "It's an honor to work with STC Group to deliver dedicated, secure networks that support the expansion of Saudi Arabia's broader digital infrastructure program," added John Gedmark, CEO and co-founder of Astranis. "Countries require national control over critical networks and data, and we built Astranis to deliver it." Get a weekly roundup of MENA news, direct to your inbox. More in space.

stc group and Astranis advance Saudi Arabia's connectivity with dedicated satellite

stc group and Astranis advance Saudi Arabia's connectivity with dedicated satellite. Space Technologies September 10, 2026 Dedicated satellite capacity to deliver enterprise-grade connectivity across Saudi Arabia's networks in 2027. The partnership gives stc group full authority over payload configuration, coverage, and in-region data security. SAN FRANCISCO AND RIYADH, September 10, 2026 - stc group, a leading digital enabler, and Astranis today announced an agreement to deploy a dedicated satellite serving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The satellite, part of Astranis' Block 3 scheduled to launch in 2027, will expand stc group's portfolio of satellite communication services and enhance connectivity across the Kingdom. Countries around the world are increasingly investing in dedicated communications infrastructure, prioritizing ownership and control over shared capacity. Saudi Arabia's investment reflects the same shift, with expanded satellite coverage adding a further layer of redundancy alongside the Kingdom's existing fiber network and reinforcing communications infrastructure that is already a national priority alongside other key sectors. Together, we are setting a new benchmark for secure and reliable connectivity supporting the Kingdom's digital vision." This partnership gives stc group full authority over payload configuration and coverage, with data remaining in-region under enterprise-grade security. The model complements stc group's capacity in other orbits, further expanding the reach and resilience of its network. Astranis' satellite offering is built for rapid deployment, providing stc group with capacity on an unmatched timeline. "It's an honor to work with stc group to deliver dedicated, secure networks that support the expansion of Saudi Arabia's broader digital infrastructure program," said John Gedmark, CEO and co-founder of Astranis. "Countries require national control over critical networks and data, and we built Astranis to deliver it."
