Anduril wins US navy prize for accelerated missile development. The US Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) have awarded Anduril Industries the Tactical Missile Innovation Prize, recognizing its approach to accelerating tactical missile development. Launched in January 2026, the challenge sought next-generation concepts rather than finished products to develop low-cost, versatile missile systems that meet modern operational requirements. The competition emphasized "non-traditional acquisition pathways and industry collaboration" to achieve "scalable production and faster fielding" of disruptive capabilities. Driving 'more practical ways' Anduril emerged from more than 40 submissions, with judges citing its "credible" end-to-end methodology. The company's proposal integrates digital engineering, modeling and simulation, and flight testing into a unified development process aligned with immediate battlefield needs. "The NPS-ONR Tactical Missile Innovation Prize Challenge underscores the value of engaging industry in new ways," said Kaitie Penry, director of emerging technology and innovation at NPS. "The winning submission highlights how innovative thinking...can help focus and accelerate prototypes and concepts into more affordable, adaptable capabilities." Anduril will receive a $200,000 award from ONR as part of the prize and may pursue further collaboration with NPS through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement. "Critical warfighter needs demand faster, more practical ways to move from idea to application," explained US Marine Corps Maj. Dillon Pierce, who led the challenge. "This challenge highlighted innovative ways to do just that."

Anduril and Impulse Space join Golden Dome orbital interceptor effort. 6 April 2026 Credit: Wikipedia Commons Two US defence-tech startups, Anduril and Impulse Space, are moving into one of the most ambitious elements of Donald Trump's proposed Golden Dome missile defence system: space-based interceptors, reports Bloomberg. What are the interceptors? According to sources familiar with the effort, the Pentagon selected the two companies to develop prototype interceptors designed to track and destroy missiles from orbit. Anduril leads the project, while Impulse Space acts as a subcontractor, providing in-space mobility, including propulsion and manoeuvring systems for interceptor spacecraft. The interceptor concept focuses on detecting, tracking, and engaging missile threats during flight using assets positioned in orbit. The hardware and operational concepts are now in early development. Early contracts and programme structure. The United States Space Force awarded a set of classified contracts in November for interceptor prototypes, each valued at under $9 million. Officials did not publicly disclose the recipients, but Anduril and Impulse are among the companies involved. Golden Dome was established by executive order and remains a classified programme. Officials have released only limited public information, mainly contract announcements and statements, and have provided few technical details. Developers designed the system as a multi-layer missile defence network that combines ground, air, and space components. Company roles and capabilities. Impulse Space, founded in 2021 by former SpaceX propulsion chief Tom Mueller, develops spacecraft for in-space transportation. Its vehicles are capable of moving payloads between orbits and performing orbital manoeuvres, supporting the positioning and deployment of space assets. The company has contracts with NASA, the National Reconnaissance Office, and the US Space Systems Command. Anduril develops autonomous defence systems and the Lattice command-and-control platform, which integrates data from sensors, radars, and satellites. The company has secured multiple Space Force contracts related to space-domain awareness and tracking systems. The two companies have previously partnered on spacecraft combining propulsion systems, sensor payloads, and autonomy software for national security missions. Golden Dome programme scope. Golden Dome includes a space-based interceptor layer intended to operate in orbit alongside ground and airborne systems. The architecture requires coordination between tracking, command-and-control, and interception capabilities across multiple domains. The programme's estimated cost is approximately $185 billion. An initial operational demonstration is targeted for 2028, according to programme lead General Michael Guetlein. Impulse Space, Anduril to develop space interceptor prototypes. Impulse Space is working with Anduril Industries on prototype space-based interceptors for President Donald Trump's Golden Dome shield, people familiar with the matter said. Impulse Space is a California spacecraft startup led by Tom Mueller, a founding member and employee No. 1 at SpaceX. The companies have been selected by the Pentagon to develop prototypes, the people said. In November, the US Space Force said it awarded multiple contracts of under US$9 million each to unnamed firms, with Impulse serving as a subcontractor to Anduril, the people said. The interceptors are meant to track and destroy missiles from orbit, but the technology does not yet exist, and Golden Dome could cost US$185 billion and show operational capability by 2028, General Michael Guetlein said in March. Food for thought. Implications, context, and why it matters. Tiny contracts open the door to a multi-billion dollar prize. * Anduril and Impulse Space are competing with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and startup True Anomaly, which Reuters reported were among firms that received initial prototype awards 1. * A July Pentagon presentation seen by Reuters put the early awards at about $120,000 each, keeping them below the $9 million level that typically triggers public disclosure requirements 2, 1. * Those starter deals feed into a bigger contest with a $340 million prize pool for companies that complete an on-orbit test, based on the July presentation cited by Reuters 2. * Winners can then pursue production work estimated at $1.8 billion to $3.4 billion a year, which makes the small awards a high-pressure entry step 2. The Pentagon is setting up a showdown between defense giants and startups. * The Golden Dome approach pushes newer defense tech firms to compete head-to-head with traditional defense primes 3. * For startups like Anduril, an award can serve as proof of capability and help a shift from experimental vendor to potential prime contractor on a large weapons system 3. * For incumbents like Lockheed Martin, participating helps protect existing missile-defense business lines as attention moves to space-based systems meant to track and destroy missiles from orbit 3. * Software also sits at the center of the effort. Anduril and Palantir Technologies (a software company that sells data-analysis tools to governments and enterprises) are working together on Golden Dome software, according to a source familiar with the matter cited in a Reuters pickup 4.
