Requirements
  • Strong people leadership skills, with a track record of managing workflows, setting team priorities, and developing junior talent on and off the shop floor.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail, with independent judgment when resolving ambiguous machining, workflow, or resource problems within the lab.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on computer numerical control machining experience in a high-precision industry, along with at least 1 year of leadership, supervisory, or team management experience.
  • Expert proficiency in computer-aided manufacturing programming and 3-axis computer numerical control machine setup and operation; Fusion 360 is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of machining fundamentals, including feeds and speeds, tool wear, workholding rigidity, and holding tolerances below 0.001 inch (0.025 millimeters).
  • Ability to personally produce precision parts consistently across engineering metals, polymers, and ceramics.
  • Working familiarity with fused deposition modeling, resin, and selective laser sintering 3D printing workflows sufficient to understand technicians, coordinate their work, and resolve production issues.
  • Working familiarity with electrical assembly and wiring sufficient to understand electrical technicians and keep their work moving without performing it directly.
  • Professional, proactive communication across all levels of the team while managing competing priorities and schedule pressure.
  • Proficiency with manual shop equipment, including mills, lathes, saws, and hand tools, plus physical ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience managing team operations in a fast-paced hardware environment alongside design engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • Manage daily priorities, lab logistics, and capacity for the Machinist, 3D Printing, and Electrical Technicians while balancing machine readiness, tooling and consumable inventory, material availability, research and development schedules, and engineering deadlines.
  • Mentor junior machinists through advanced computer numerical control setups, computer-aided manufacturing programming, and workholding design while coordinating with 3D printing and electrical technicians and maintaining clear communication with engineering.
  • Program, set up, and operate 3-axis computer numerical control mills across engineering materials, taking ownership of precision parts from start to finish and performing in-process inspection.
  • Design and fabricate custom workholding, including soft jaws and vacuum fixtures, guide technicians in developing solutions, read and interpret engineering drawings and computer-aided design models, interpret advanced geometric dimensioning and tolerancing callouts, verify part requirements, and provide design-for-manufacturability feedback to engineers.
  • Oversee quality assurance and part verification, coach technicians on metrology tools, lead root cause analysis for machining defects or tolerance drift, and document machining and additive processes, setup instructions, inspection results, and control plans for repeatable builds.
  • Maintain and enforce strict environmental, health, and safety compliance across the prototype lab and machine shop, ensuring safe equipment operation and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Execute assembly work for small manufacturing runs, assist with facility setup tasks, and maintain lab organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • A degree in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience is accepted.
  • Experience with 5-axis machining or multi-axis turning.
  • Experience programming or operating coordinate measuring machines or using advanced metrology workflows.
  • Familiarity with difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium, Inconel, hardened steels, and ceramics.
  • Deep working knowledge of fused deposition modeling, resin, and selective laser sintering 3D printing workflows sufficient to actively mentor technicians on machine setup, material selection, and troubleshooting.
  • Deep working knowledge of cable fabrication, harness assembly, and wiring schematics sufficient to mentor or directly support electrical technicians.
  • Experience with tungsten inert gas welding, light fabrication, or other joining processes.
  • Familiarity with other prototyping equipment such as laser cutters or sheet metal fabrication tools.
  • Experience documenting inspection results, build logs, and nonconformances within a manufacturing execution system, product lifecycle management system, or enterprise resource planning system.
