Blackstone shares jump 5.3% as $63B inflows offset 13% earnings drop

Blackstone shares rose 5.26% to $115.34 on Thursday, even though the alternative-asset manager reported weaker third-quarter distributable earnings. Investors focused on strong fundraising and recurring fees. Distributable earnings fell 13% to $1.32 per share, and net realisations dropped 34% to about $332 million as investment exits slowed. Net inflows topped $63 billion, lifting assets under management to $1.37 trillion. Fee-related earnings rose 6%, softening the hit from weaker investment-sale profits. Blackstone now needs to turn more investments into realised profits while keeping new capital coming in.

Blackstone eyes AI financing boom, with 7% of its $1.4T assets already exposed

Blackstone sees growing opportunities to finance artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, from chips and computing equipment to power generation and data centres. "The needs of capital here are so enormous. It's unprecedented in our lifetimes," President Jon Gray said on the firm's third-quarter earnings call. The firm is reportedly committing $9 billion to a junior-debt tranche in an $18 billion financing package for Anthropic's AI chips and computing infrastructure, part of a broader $60 billion arrangement. In June, its Credit & Insurance business joined a $35 billion financing launched by Apollo and Broadcom for Anthropic. Blackstone is also weighing dedicated investment vehicles alongside broader funds. About 7% of its $1.4 trillion in assets under management is exposed to AI infrastructure. Gray said the firm focuses on physical infrastructure and long-term contracted assets to manage risks such as technological obsolescence.

Blackstone's Gray says CoreWeave will "find a way through" financing strain on $51.6B debt

Blackstone president and chief operating officer Jon Gray says CoreWeave will "find a way through" its financing pressure. He told CNBC the neocloud company has a talented chief executive officer and a strong underlying business. CoreWeave's stock has fallen 14% over the past week, while bond yields and credit default swap spreads have risen. The company has roughly $51.6 billion in total debt, including about $35 billion in notes, bonds, and loans. Gray said demand for computing power is strong, with compute pricing up 50% for neoclouds that get through. Their legacy chips are worth more than expected, he added, and their data centres are leased below market. Blackstone reported third-quarter revenue of $3.22 billion, below the $3.28 billion analysts expected. Adjusted earnings of $1.32 per share beat the $1.26 estimate.

Blackstone's Khaira says AI-buildout debt fears are overblown as it backs compute with $1.3T in assets

Blackstone executive Jas Khaira says fears over AI infrastructure debt are overblown. Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, he said most data centre debt is backed "by the most creditworthy companies in the world," since hyperscalers are the main customers. Blackstone, which manages $1.3 trillion in assets, lends to neoclouds, cloud providers that rent out AI chips. Its first such deal was a $2.3 billion loan to CoreWeave in 2023. This year it co-led a $10 billion credit facility for Firmus with Coatue. Worries have grown as rates rise. CoreWeave's debt is about $50 billion, and its shares fell over 20% in recent days. Firmus scrapped its planned IPO at a roughly $30 billion valuation. "This doesn't feel like something where you've got 2008 banks that are shaky credits," Khaira said.
