Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain certification required by applicable standards for the assigned facility or department within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must complete mandatory drug testing before employment and submit to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work shift changes, mandatory overtime, double shifts, holdovers, and call-backs as required for an essential-personnel role in a 24-hour facility.
  • Must be able to work with juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for applicable positions.
  • Must pass all applicable physical and written portions of the Juvenile Academy or meet all standards related to the Prison Rape Elimination Act and ethics for specific positions.
  • Must be physically able to restrain and chase youths and perform handling-with-care techniques, including takedowns, chasing, and restraining youth, as required by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Must be able to work inside a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
  • May be required to use a vehicle to transport youths.
Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility in compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable standards.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to youths to promote and increase personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Make critical and sound judgments and decisions during crises or potentially dangerous situations in the absence of the supervisor; inform the supervisor of problems, situations encountered, and actions taken; and document actions.
  • Discipline youths by enforcing facility rules, document behavior and other specific information, and forward information to appropriate personnel.
  • Serve as backup to staff and assume duties as necessary, including administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.
  • Coordinate and provide daily educational and entertaining programs and activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
