Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical duties, including data entry into the Hospital Information System, to support unit operations.
  • Support overall unit flow and assist patients and medical staff by answering incoming calls, organizing information, and handling admission, transfer, and discharge duties.
  • Collaborate with unit-based clinical staff and other departments to coordinate off-unit testing and appointments.
  • Work with unit leadership and supply chain to support the unit’s inventory needs.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and staff in accordance with Jefferson’s values and help create an inclusive environment through problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Recognize patients, families, and designated care partners and interact with them compassionately and respectfully while following established protocols to minimize risk of harm.
  • Communicate with and support the interprofessional team, patients, families, and designated care partners.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Charge Nurse to meet unit needs.
  • Monitor the electronic patient bed system for admission and discharge bed flow, assign admissions, complete staffing assignments when needed, and request patient transport as needed.
  • Coordinate patient appointments and testing in the acute care setting, including transportation, and coordinate patient discharge appointments when needed.
  • Maintain complete and organized medical records and perform clerical functions supporting department operations.
  • Organize the work environment for effective and efficient department operations.
  • Process medical orders to facilitate implementation of the medical regimen for patient care.
  • Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate errors, and support ethical decision-making.
  • Respond actively during unit emergency codes by calling the emergency response dispatcher and helping the team quickly gather equipment and supplies.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures, attempt resets, and refer unresolved issues to the appropriate on-call repair team.
  • Participate in unit committee meetings in addition to staff meetings.
  • Monitor the tube station for incoming and outgoing items, including medications and cardiac monitor strips, and dispense items accordingly.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures and perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Data entry experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is highly recommended.
