Requirements
  • Graduation from a CSA/CFA program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, American Board of Surgical Assistants, National Assistant at Surgery Certification, or CCI Institute/CRNFA.
  • Three years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification.
  • Certified Surgical First Assist certification.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Sound clinical knowledge of technology and treatment applications, knowledge of participating surgical procedures, clinical operating-room scrubbing skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational capability.
Responsibilities
  • Provide continuity of care for perioperative patients through preoperative management, intraoperative surgical first assisting, and postoperative patient care management.
  • Support surgical productivity, educate surgical residents, provide second assistance when needed, and first-assist surgeons when surgical residents are unavailable.
  • Provide patient care for patients of all ages and provide leadership and direction to the perioperative team where needed.
  • Collaborate with the surgeon and healthcare team to perform safe operations with optimal patient outcomes.
  • Review patient history, physical examinations, and preoperative test results, and perform postoperative transfer of care and monitoring for complications.
  • Serve as first assistant in designated surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon or physician.
  • Handle tissue appropriately, use surgical instruments properly, and apply safe tissue-handling principles.
  • Provide exposure to the operative site, maintain hemostasis, perform wound closure, and apply advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology.
  • Safely position patients for surgery and assist with transport to and from the operating suite.
  • Assist the surgeon in identifying patient and staff safety hazards.
  • Prep and drape patients for surgical procedures using appropriate aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Use retractors, equipment, and instruments to expose the operative site and enhance the visual field.
  • Suction and sponge to maintain a dry surgical field and optimal visualization.
  • Provide counter-traction of tissue using various instruments.
  • Maintain hemostasis by clamping or ligating vessels, using electrocautery, applying direct pressure, assisting with topical pharmaceutical agents such as thrombin, and using other methods as directed.
  • Tie and cut sutures and suture various tissues and tissue planes using appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Assist with wound closure or independently close wounds under the surgeon's direction.
  • Apply dressings and tape at the end of surgical procedures using proper aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Maintain current knowledge of performed procedures.
  • Take a scrub role when not needed as a first assistant.
  • Follow the Association of Surgical Assistant guideline for surgical assistants in robotic surgery and maintain defined robotic-surgery competencies.
  • Educate and train staff in accordance with Association of periOperative Registered Nurses education standards for the Certified Surgical First Assistant.
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate of Science in Surgical Technology.
