About the job

Requirements
  • Significant professional software engineering experience, typically 6+ years, including several years building large language model-based or agentic systems, with a demonstrable track record as a senior or lead engineer.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including clean, tested, production-grade code and sound systems-level design decisions.
  • Commercial experience building multi-agent or agentic artificial intelligence systems in production and owning them as an engineer rather than integrating them as a user.
  • Strong Python skills and hands-on experience building on large language model frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, Haystack, or similar, with the ability to work below the framework when necessary.
  • Experience designing and deploying artificial intelligence and machine learning systems into real production environments rather than only notebooks or demonstrations.
  • A solid grasp of model engineering, including inference, latency and performance, data pipelines, state and memory, and tool or function calling.
  • Hands-on experience building search and retrieval over very large multimodal datasets of 3 TB or more of text, imagery, telemetry, and sensor data, including indexing, embedding, querying, and feeding results into large language model or agentic pipelines with appropriate latency and precision.
  • Fluency with Docker, Git, and cloud platforms, with AWS preferred.
  • Understanding of secure deployment patterns including air-gapped, on-premises, or sovereign-cloud environments.
  • Ability to build dependable systems and explain them clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Senior technical ownership of end-to-end delivery, technical ownership of the workstream, direction-setting for other engineers, documentation, and knowledge transfer.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build multi-agent artificial intelligence systems from the ground up, using frameworks such as LangGraph or Haystack where appropriate and building the underlying orchestration, state, and tool-calling infrastructure when needed.
  • Write clean, tested, maintainable code and make sound systems-level decisions while treating reliability, latency, and failure behaviour as first-class concerns.
  • Integrate large language and vision-language models into reasoning, search, summarisation, and task-execution pipelines, and build the retrieval, memory, and guardrails that make them dependable.
  • Deploy systems into cloud, on-premises, and fully offline environments while engineering for their security and reliability constraints.
  • Build production pipelines from data ingestion through inference and own the complete path.
  • Build evaluation, observability, and guardrails that demonstrate agent behaviour, model performance, and failure modes.
  • Act as a technical authority for agentic artificial intelligence, take technical ownership of the workstream, set design patterns and direction for other engineers, and leave maintainable systems and documentation for the team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with multimodal reasoning.
  • Experience with edge or offline artificial intelligence deployments.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, including EKS or OpenShift, for managing deployed applications.
  • Machine learning operations experience, including model evaluation, monitoring, and reproducibility.
  • Experience with observability tooling for agentic systems, including model drift, agent behaviour, and performance monitoring.
  • Experience with agent orchestration patterns and inter-agent communication protocols such as A2A.
  • Familiarity with the Model Context Protocol for tool and context integration in agentic systems.
  • Familiarity with secure-by-design development principles including ISO 27001, NIST, and OWASP.
  • Experience in defence, national security, or similarly regulated environments.
  • Contributions to open-source artificial intelligence or machine learning projects.
  • An active Security Check or Developed Vetting clearance.

About the company

Oxford Dynamics builds sovereign AI and robotic systems for space, security, and defence, developing core IP for both terrestrial and orbital use under government contracts. AVIS is an offline generative AI platform for secure data search, analysis, and summarization; SR-1 fuses sensor data to speed up the military decision cycle, and Strider is a semi-autonomous robot for hazardous environments that can operate beyond line of sight. The company differentiates itself by delivering on-premises, sovereign AI and autonomous capabilities tightly integrated for defense needs, with both land and space applications. Its goal is to unlock underutilized data for defence and national security, reduce human risk in dangerous missions, and build secure sovereign technology through long-term government contracts and partnerships, including backing from BAE Systems.

What believers are saying

  • The DDAD Open Framework selection in February 2026 expands Oxford Dynamics' defence pipeline.
  • AVIS already processes thousands of submissions, proving repeatable demand for secure offline GenAI.
  • BAE's 2025 investment validates the product set and opens distribution into major platforms.

What critics are saying

  • MoD revenue dominates; losing ASGARD or EA Lite renewals would cripple 2026 growth.
  • BAE integration can crowd out independent sales and make Oxford Dynamics a captive supplier.
  • Strider still targets hazardous deployments; one field failure would damage procurement credibility immediately.

What makes Oxford Dynamics unique

  • AVIS won MoD trust in 2024, then supported the 2025 Strategic Defence Review.
  • BAE Systems invested in August 2025 and is integrating Oxford Dynamics into Prophesea.
  • Oxford Dynamics spans software, sensor fusion, and Strider robotics across contested defence environments.

Oxford Dynamics secures £1m for robot

Harwell-based AI & robotics start-up Oxford Dynamics received £1m from the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) to develop a multi-terrain robot for DEFRA. The robot aims to replace humans in initial contact during chemical or biological incidents and assist in environmental remediation. It will operate beyond the line of sight and in difficult terrains, with future plans to integrate Oxford Dynamics’ AVIS generative AI for enhanced real-time data processing.
