Requirements

  • Ability to work around chemicals, biohazards, and mechanical and electrical hazards and lift and manipulate up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to backpack gear up a ladder to a secondary platform approximately 15 feet above the water surface.
  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot, clean, calibrate, deploy, and retrieve scientific equipment, including YSI sensors, sondes, and handheld meters.
  • Service water quality and weather station equipment weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly according to standardized protocols.
  • Maintain and repair SWMP station infrastructure and in situ instrumentation as required.
  • Coordinate and perform research activities related to sample collection, including scheduling, water collection, and deployment and retrieval of an automated portable water sampler.
  • Operate vessels in shallow water conditions along the Texas Coastal Bend, including trailering vessels.
  • Prepare and analyze field samples in the laboratory, including preparing sampling containers and filters, filtering water, weighing filters, and conducting chlorophyll analysis.
  • Retrieve and submit SWMP raw data, conduct quality assurance and quality control data checks, and generate quarterly and annual metadata files for submission to the NERRS CDMO.
  • Ensure that water quality, meteorological, and nutrient data are entered by the submission deadline.
  • Maintain an organized and clean working environment, including washing dishes and stowing equipment and supplies.
  • Manage equipment inventory and order equipment and supplies.
  • Train and supervise interns, students, and volunteers in support of the SWMP and other MAR programs as needed.
  • Assist in program activities of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve across all sectors.
  • Attend an annual, week-long training for NERR SWMP technicians.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of hands-on experience in a technical maintenance role, such as marine, mechanical, electrical, or a related field.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience trailering, serving as crew, operating, and captaining vessels up to 24 feet in shallow water conditions.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of water quality sampling and analysis procedures.
  • Knowledge of coastal and estuarine ecosystems and processes.
