What believers are saying

  • Boeing finalized Korean Air's 103-jet order on September 16, 2026, adding backlog.
  • Q2 2026 free cash flow turned positive at $631 million as deliveries improved.
  • FAA certified the 737 MAX 7 in August 2026, clearing a key product bottleneck.

What critics are saying

  • SPEEA engineers rejected Boeing's contract on August 21, 2026; a strike starts October 7.
  • Ortberg said September 16, 2026 737 MAX output still lacks stability at 47 monthly.
  • Another quality failure would trigger FAA shutdowns, customer cancellations, and irreversible trust loss.

What makes Boeing unique

  • Boeing remains one of two global large-aircraft duopolists in 737, 787, and 777X.
  • Its $715 billion backlog and $85 billion defense backlog provide long-duration demand.
  • Defense, space, and commercial programs create cross-customer leverage unavailable to pure-play rivals.

Boeing completes 13-satellite O3b mPOWER constellation with $715B order backlog

Boeing has completed its 13-satellite O3b mPOWER constellation for operator SES, following the launch of the final three satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The satellites joined 10 already in orbit. The constellation will support high-speed global connectivity for governments, cruise lines, commercial airlines and mobile users. Boeing's software-defined architecture developed for this programme is also being adapted for US Space Force's Evolved Strategic SATCOM systems and Wideband Global SATCOM. The satellites must complete orbit raising and initialisation before entering service in mid-2027. Boeing reported a total backlog of $715 billion at the end of the second quarter, with $85 billion in its Defence, Space & Security segment. Hedge fund ownership in Boeing declined from 99 funds to 90 funds between consecutive quarters, according to 13F filings.

Boeing locks in $36.2B Korean Air order but deliveries won't boost earnings until 2030s

Boeing secured a $36.2 billion order from Korean Air covering 737 MAX, 787-10, and 777X aircraft, but deliveries won't begin until the early 2030s. The order was previously logged as unidentified commitments from last summer, meaning it represents existing backlog rather than new demand. Boeing's commercial backlog now exceeds 6,200 aircraft valued at $597 billion. The company posted Q2 2026 revenue of $24.56 billion with a core loss per share of $0.76. CFO Jay Malabe projects $10 billion in annual free cash flow as the backlog converts to deliveries. The stock has fallen 11.66% over the past month after CEO Kelly Ortberg acknowledged 737 MAX production stabilisation is taking longer than expected. The order's value will materialise gradually through progress payments, with most revenue recognised at delivery in the 2030s.

Boeing's Starliner may secure 10+ NASA missions despite $2B in losses and leaving crew stranded in 2024

NASA is in talks with Boeing to expand the Starliner programme despite the capsule's troubled 2024 test flight that left two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station, according to The Wall Street Journal. Discussions involve 10 or more additional Starliner flights in coming years. In November 2025, NASA reduced firm orders from six missions to four, designating the next flight as uncrewed cargo. Starliner flew its first crewed test in June 2024, carrying astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams on a planned eight-day mission. Helium leaks and thruster failures forced the capsule to return empty in September. The astronauts came home on SpaceX's Crew Dragon in March 2025 after nine months in orbit. The programme has cost Boeing over $2 billion and still lacks human spaceflight certification.

Boeing ramps 737 production to 47/month, targets $10B annual cash flow from record $715B backlog

Boeing stock has fallen 8% over the past year despite the company delivering aircraft at its fastest pace since 2018. The planemaker is ramping production of its 737 narrow-body to 47 units monthly, with plans to reach 52 per month using a new fourth production line. Boeing holds a record $715bn backlog with over 6,200 aircraft orders. Trailing twelve-month revenue reached $94bn, up 24.8% year-over-year, though operating margins remain negative at -5.4%. The company posted $631m in positive free cash flow in Q2 2026 and guides for $1bn to $3bn for calendar year 2026. Management targets $10bn annual free cash flow but hasn't specified when this will be achieved. Key risks include engine delivery delays and seat certification approvals, both expected to continue through 2026.

Boeing's $8.4B Spirit buyback reveals $1.9B in hidden liabilities

Boeing has uncovered hundreds of millions of dollars in additional liabilities at Spirit AeroSystems following its $8.4 billion acquisition of the fuselage supplier in December 2025. Spirit's assumed liabilities now exceed identifiable assets by roughly $1.9 billion, including $1.52 billion tied to below-market customer contracts. Boeing repurchased Spirit's factories after selling them in 2005, reversing an outsourcing strategy following safety failures including two fatal 737 MAX crashes and the 2024 Alaska Airlines door-plug incident. Despite these challenges, Boeing reported operational improvements in the second quarter, with revenue rising 8% to $24.56 billion and free cash flow turning positive at $631 million. The company reduced fuselage defects by 45% through new inspections at Spirit's Wichita facility. Boeing maintains a $715 billion backlog and targets $10 billion in annual free cash flow long-term.
