Requirements
  • A minimum of three years of experience specifically in behavioral health utilization review and case management.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and OASIS guidelines.
  • Knowledge of medical necessity criteria pertaining to psychiatry and substance abuse.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulatory guidelines governing behavioral health.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree.
Responsibilities
  • Review and monitor all patients admitted to psychiatry or substance abuse services for appropriateness of admission according to nationally recognized criteria.
  • Monitor discharge plans and continued stays.
  • Provide clinical information to managed care plans or other intermediaries to secure certification status and hospital reimbursement.
  • Collaborate with physicians, social workers, and nursing staff to ensure discharge plans are implemented timely, communicated to health plans, and executed within appropriate length-of-stay allowances.
  • Work under the direction of the Behavioral Health Case Manager to ensure all patients are reviewed and certified.
  • Collaborate and communicate with members of the Behavioral Healthcare team to ensure patients designated for admission have the documentation necessary to meet admission criteria for reimbursement.
  • Facilitate discharges and assist the discharge planning process by identifying delays and barriers to discharge.
