Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least two years of laboratory experience.
  • Working knowledge of aseptic sampling techniques, automated laboratory equipment, and acceptable methods and procedures.
  • Broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of a food testing laboratory.
  • Ability to complete required training.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring hand and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and mouse and handle communications and computer components.
  • Ability to work in conditions involving potential exposure to odors, fumes, airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, and microbiological pathogens; noise and temperatures may vary.
  • Color vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with chemical testing of food products, ingredients, and other matrices, including preparing solutions and reagents, homogenizing samples, performing proximate analysis using balances, ovens, furnaces, and extractors, conducting chemical extractions and procedures, and maintaining glassware.
  • Prepare and maintain chemical solutions.
  • Apply standard laboratory techniques to daily work.
  • Inventory and report expendable supplies and materials needed for testing.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance through daily cleaning, sanitizing, and trash disposal.
  • Independently carry out assigned processes, procedures, or techniques in accordance with FSNS policies and procedures and customer requirements.
  • Maintain laboratory conditions, including equipment, supplies, quality assurance programs, and accurate records throughout procedures.
  • Perform all activities safely, hygienically, and efficiently.
  • Share information in an open and timely manner.
  • Keep laboratory workspaces clean and organized.
  • Manage priorities and schedules to achieve individual and team goals and participate in the Food Safety Net Services team.
  • Be responsible for personal safety and the safety of others working in the area.
  • Complete required training.

  • A BS degree in Life Science or a related field.
  • Ability to travel; overnight travel may be required at management's discretion.
