Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • One year of experience in a healthcare or collections setting is preferred.
  • One year of customer service experience that includes answering telephone calls is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • The employee must follow state and federal collections laws and applicable hospital guidelines.
  • The employee must maintain patient confidentiality according to WVUHS policy and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • The employee must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The employee must be organized, attentive to detail, able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and able to complete repetitive duties throughout the shift.
  • The employee must be able to interact with people with varying personalities, education levels, capabilities, and communication skills.
  • The employee must have normal visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment.
  • The employee must be able to perform the required walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling throughout the work shift.
  • The employee must be able to perform assigned tasks in a high-volume, fast-paced office environment despite frequent interruptions.
Responsibilities
  • Enter accurate patient demographic information.
  • Answer telephone calls from patients and resolve patient liability issues in accordance with applicable laws and WVUHS collection policies and procedures.
  • Assertively pursue necessary information and secure financial resolution on accounts.
  • Obtain demographic, billing, and insurance information.
  • Accurately post payments and adjustments.
  • Communicate workflow-hindering problems to management.
  • Resolve patient liability concerns by assisting with payment arrangements and financial assistance.
  • Work closely with courthouse personnel.
  • Answer patient questions quickly, accurately, and courteously.
  • Follow up on accounts as indicated by system reminders.
  • Support the Associate Collections Counsel and other members of the WVUHS Legal Department.
  • Communicate professionally and demonstrate concern for individuals’ needs.
  • Prepare legal documents with considerable attention to detail.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree in a related medical field, such as medical assisting or medical office administration, is preferred.
