Requirements
  • Must be at least 15 years old at the time of hire.
  • Must have prior experience working with children.
  • Must complete SwimRight training within two weeks of hire.
  • Must be computer literate and have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications and Outlook email.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with children and coworkers.
  • Must be committed to delivering quality customer service.
  • Must be able to follow supervisors' directions and written and verbal protocols.
  • Must be able to swim distances of 25 meters and dive to a pool depth of at least 6 feet.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more and hold a child in the water.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, stoop, and kneel frequently.
  • Must be able to remain in the pool for extended periods of time, including more than two hours.
  • Must be able to recognize situations requiring lifeguarding services through adequate vision, hearing, and cognitive ability.
  • Must be able to work in high-temperature and high-humidity environments for extended periods.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swimming movements and related participant activities on the pool deck.
  • Must be able to read routine and technical documents, use a computer, and answer a telephone.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safety of every pool patron through education and attentiveness.
  • Teach children and adults using predesigned individual or group lessons, including hands-on work in the pool with young children when required.
  • Build swimmers' confidence, skills, and enjoyment of swimming.
  • Track swimmers' skill development through record keeping.
  • Set up and break down equipment.
  • Consistently enforce pool rules and regulations.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff, maintenance personnel, and administrative personnel.
  • Resolve member concerns professionally or escalate them as appropriate.
  • Follow supervisors' directions and established protocols.
  • Develop professional relationships with members.
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions and in-services.
  • Create a welcoming environment in which each individual is valued and respected.
  • Support JCC Greater Boston's mission, vision, and values through personal role modeling.
  • Attend JCC meetings and participate in department goals and initiatives.
  • Perform other activities as required by the organization.
