Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is required.
  • An active New Jersey registered nurse license is required.
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room certification is required.
  • American Heart Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • The role requires weekday and weekend on-call availability.
  • The nurse must apply surgical anatomy, physiology, operative techniques, asepsis, and infection-control principles in the registered nurse first-assist role.
  • The nurse must perform patient positioning, preparation, and draping.
  • The nurse must handle tissue and use instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques to provide operative exposure.
  • The nurse must perform wound closure and suture the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissues, and skin, applying surgical dressings.
  • The nurse must recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate corrective actions within the limits of preparation and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Assist surgeons in operating rooms across surgical divisions as a registered nurse first assist.
  • Assist with transferring patients from the operating room.
  • Perform preoperative and postoperative evaluation and teaching.
  • Maintain continuing education and provide teaching.
  • Visit patients and make rounds with or without the sponsoring physician, documenting assessments in progress notes for co-signature by the sponsoring surgeon.
  • Write postoperative orders as directed by the operating surgeon while the patient is in the recovery room; the operating surgeon must immediately sign the orders.
  • During an operating surgeon's incapacity or unavailability, maintain the patient's status while a substitute surgeon is summoned, except in a dire emergency.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • Experience or certification as a Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant.
