Responsibilities
  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assists customers by: (examples include) escorting them to the products they’re looking for; securing products that are out of reach; loading or unloading heavy items; performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders.
  • Takes customer orders at Bakery counter.
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule.
  • Decorates bakery items in a timely manner.
  • Keeps current on new designs and trends.
  • Ensures department standards are met.
  • Checks cake orders for details (size, deco pack, icing needs, dates) daily and indicates supply needs.
  • Orders supplies for decorating area and checks off the order.
  • Delivers product and sets up wedding cakes on site (outside the store).
  • Communicates with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads and special needs on a daily basis.
  • Checks product dates, pulls cases for work and lists items to fill or replace.
  • Develops bakery orders for bakers on a daily basis. (Orders cakes, sizes, etc.)
  • Tracks daily retail production. Identifies, with co-workers, tasks to be completed.
  • Operates as a lead worker with part-time or other employees. (Instructs and reviews work).
  • Participates in employee cross training.
  • Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat.
  • Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.
  • Wraps all product as necessary.
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed.
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Longtime Watertown Hy-Vee Store Director Shane Conger retiring. * ben dylla * mar 12, 2026. {KXLG - Watertown, SD} Shane Conger has been a fixture at the Watertown Hy-Vee for 15 years, but at the end of March, he will be stepping away from his duties as Store Director. Shane started bagging groceries at his local Hy-Vee in Davenport, Iowa, at the age of 16. Hy-Vee has been the only employer that Conger has ever had. Conger became a Store Director for the first time in 2007 in Albany, Missouri. Three years later, he moved with his family to Watertown to lead the newly remodeled Hy-Vee. Conger says the opportunity, along with his positive experiences with the company and what he heard about the Watertown community, helped shape their decision to make the move. Conger still credits Hy-Vee with the opportunity to have the success story, like he had of climbing the corporate ladder. Conger credits Hy-Vee's continued willingness to be a great place to be someone's first job. Whether that is stocking shelves or running a checkout, the younger employees at Hy-Vee continue to be one of Shane's favorite parts of being a Store Director. As a Store Director, Conger says you have to be flexible because no two days are alike. Managing 19 different departments can feel daunting at times, but he has tried to find a routine to help the store run as smoothly as possible. As Conger gets ready to start his new chapter of retirement, he wanted to pass along his thanks to the community of Watertown. Conger says he plans to stay busy in retirement. After missing many weekends and holidays while running the Hy-Vee store, he's looking forward to spending more time with his family. He also hopes to dust off the golf clubs and get back out on the course. Conger says he doesn't plan to sit still for long and may even pick up a part-time job, just one where he doesn't have to be the boss.

Hy-Vee, Harvesters partner with KCK school to launch first-of-its-kind on-campus pantry. Hy-Vee, Harvesters and KC Dream Center partner on first Feeding America-affiliated school pantry in Kansas. Published: Mar. 10, 2026 at 10:31 AM PDT KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - M.E. Pearson Elementary School has opened an on-site food pantry, giving all 560 students and their families access to groceries inside the building. The pantry, located in a converted science storage closet, is the first on-site school food pantry in Kansas opened by Hy-Vee in partnership with a Feeding America-affiliated food bank. One in four children in Wyandotte County face food insecurity, according to Harvesters- The Community Food Network. A $25,000 grant and a two-question application. The pantry was funded through a $25,000 grant from Hy-Vee. School social worker Jill Donahy said the process began when she responded to an email from Harvesters -The Community Food Network that included two questions: what obstacles do parents face getting food, and how can those obstacles be overcome. "It's teamwork, man," Donahy said. "We had so many people helping, not just the companies, but also staff, students, parents." Donahy said barriers identified in the application included limited pantry hours, lack of transportation, and parents working multiple jobs. From storage closet to stocked shelves. Principal Lori Cooper said the room previously served as a science storage closet before replacing the carpet with tile, repainting the walls, and installing store-style shelving. "We've got fresh produce. We've got dairy items, vegetables, spaghetti, quite an array. Cereal, peanut butter jelly," Cooper said. Cooper said the pantry held a soft opening before the official ribbon cutting, with 40 families stopping in on the first day. Partners and ongoing supply. Officials from Hy-Vee, Harvesters- The Community Food Network, and KC Dream Center participated in the ribbon-cutting. The pantry will operate on set weekly hours and will supplement twice-monthly Harvesters food drops already held at the school. A long-term commitment. Donahy said approximately 95% to 98% of M.E. Pearson's 560 pre-K through fifth-grade students qualify for free and reduced lunch. "So it's a definite need," Donahy said. Cooper said the pantry is intended as a long-term resource, not a one-time effort. "And that just leads to kids being fed and, you know, being able to focus on schoolwork when they're here because they're not hungry," Cooper said. Hy-Vee officials said the M.E. Pearson pantry will not be the last of its kind.

Hy-Vee introduces Dietitian Dishes frozen meal line. Hy-Vee has launched Dietitian Dishes, a line of frozen medically tailored meals developed by the West Des Moines, Iowa-based retailer's registered dietitians to support heart-friendly and diabetes-friendly diets. The frozen meals, available in Hy-Vee's HealthMarket department and online, come in more than 15 varieties of nutrient-dense, single-serve options. Flavors include Egg Roll in a Bowl, Braised Beef, Mediterranean Chicken and Spicy Layered Chicken Enchiladas. Each entrée is made with whole-food ingredients designed to support different dietary needs. The heat-and-eat meals can be prepared in a microwave within five minutes or less. "Dietitian Dishes make healthy eating easier, especially for individuals who are just learning how to navigate chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease," said Elisa Sloss, Hy-Vee's assistant VP of HealthMarkets and dietitians. "These dietitian-inspired entrees offer convenient, nutritious meal solutions that are packed with delicious flavor, contain key nutrients and can be prepared within minutes." Hy-Vee is one of the first grocers in the nation to develop its own line of medically tailored meals, building upon its mission of making lives easier, healthier and happier. Earlier this year, Hy-Vee introduced an online food scoring system to help customers identify better-for-you options while grocery shopping. Hy-Vee's team of registered dietitians also offer personalized nutrition counseling, available in person and virtually with insurance billing available. Jorgensen, Staff Writer It was an evening of celebration and recognition as members of the Owatonna Chamber of Commerce and Tourism braved the cold to hold their annual dinner and meeting at the Owatonna Country Club. A highlight of the evening was the recognition of the Extra Mile winners. The group's ambassadors were recognized as were the outgoing board members, while new board members were announced. The Extra Mile award is given to recognize businesses that have done extraordinary things to improve the community. This year's winners were Hy-Vee and Taco Johns. The awards were presented by Annie Priebe of Federated Insurance. "Hy-Vee exemplifies what it means to go the extra mile for the community," Priebe said. Through their partnership with Community Pathways, she said, the company helped provide 44,000 meals to neighbors in need. "Their commitment extends beyond food access," she said, "including hands-on involvement in a Habitat for Humanity build and recognition from the Steele County History Center with a Community Partnership Award." She said the company's impact was reflected in investment in youth, education, and activities that build future leaders. Store Manager Justin Lewer was honored with the Friend of Education award by Waseca Schools as a testament to personal leadership that mirrors the company's values, she said. The store sponsors an extensive list of programs including Owatonna High School boys and girls basketball, dance, wrestling, swimming and diving, cross country, soccer, football; Medford boys basketball; Owatonna Youth Hockey, softball, gymnastics, and robotics; Steele County 4-H; and other groups. Lewer and Kenny Dreyling accepted the award. Giving back to the community has been a core value for Denise and Jim Atkinson since they opened Taco Johns in 1986. "For nearly four decades, they have consistently invested in the people and programs that make our community strong," Priebe said. They have sponsored Little League teams and supported a wide range of high school athletics, including baseball, basketball, and most recently, the fishing team, helping ensure that local youth have opportunities to participate, compete, and grow, she said. They also have supported local 4-H clubs, the Steele County Free Fair, and numerous religious and educational organizations. "They have also stepped up to help feed the community during times need, always with humility and a genuine desire to give back," Priebe said. "As they often say, it has been their pleasure and privilege to support a community that has given so much to them over the past 40 years." The two were unable to attend the event, Priebe said, so the award was accepted by Taco Johns general manager, Brian Culligan. The Chamber Ambassadors are among the Chamber's most committed members, said Chamber President and CEO Brad Meier. They welcome new members, attend ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings and connect with members and are an overall welcoming arm for the group. Each month, he said, the ambassadors get points for visits, retention calls, events and wearing the proper uniform. At the annual meeting, the ambassador who has the most points wins the Wayne Starman Ambassador of the Year award, named in honor of long-time Chamber member and ambassador. Recipient of the award for 2025 was Kelly Boomgarden of Country Inn & Suites. Also recognized were board chair Deb Gillard and outgoing board members Syd Briggs of Steele-Waseca Cooperative Electric; Mike Herman of Culligan ULTRApure and Scott Mohs of Mohs Contracting/Mohs Homes. Incoming board members include Steve Glynn of Mohs Contracting, Inc., Stacy Hanson of Grapeful Wine Bar, and Brett Dorek of Culligan ULTRAPure.

Monmouth City Council approves rezoning of former Shopko site after Smithfield acquisition. With the recent sale of the former Shopko building in Monmouth to Smithfield Fresh Meats Corp, Mayor Rod Davies informs City Council has approved a change in zoning designation on the property: "The Plan Commission considered a zoning district change at 1190 North Sixth Street, the old Shopko building. We had a request to change the zoning from B4 Highway Commercial to MT General Manufacturing. The Plan Commission approved that unanimously and Council affirmed that vote to approve that change," states Davies. "Smithfield purchased that, it had been on the market for quite some time. Hy-Vee had purchased it and owned it last. Their market changed and their corporate plans changed, so they did not put in a new grocery store there. I think we were all trying to get a retail space in there, but that environment changed as well," Mayor Davies adds. According to a Warren County Property Transfers report from December, Smithfield purchased the property from Hy-Vee for $1.6 million.
